Where's this wire go ?
 
Here's a puzzle :

I found this connector hiding back under the airbox. Can't quite figure out where it goes. The car used to have a smog pump which was removed by P.O., but I didn't think they require any power. The two wires are red/white and brown. I checked it with my voltmeter, and it has 12volts at the ready. Sorry the pictures are blurry, I'm new to digital cameras. Car is a 1980 SC Euro.

Can't see the picture, but in that area they could be for the supplementary air valve, or WUR (warm up regulator).

Check on the main PP page for 911s, I think there are wiring diagrams.

I searched through those, and studied the wiring diagrams in my Bentley service manual, but I can't figure it out. My W.U.R. does have it's electrical connector attached.

Those wires might be for your heater booster fan... is that still there?

The heater blower does have it's connector. Doesn't work, but that's a problem for some other day. Thanks though.

Given the wire colors and location I suspect this connector connects to the supplementary air valve. I believe this valve is on the passenger side of the engine. However, the wire color code also matches the temperature valve. Jim

I guess I can't get the picture to show up. This mystery connector is only long enough to reach something on the left side of the engine. I have no temperature valve that I can tell. May have been removed by P.O. though if I had one.

I searched Pelican's parts diagrams and under the W.U.R. section, I see a thermo valve listed. Only for '77-'79 though. But since I have a R.O.W. car, stuff is sometimes different.

So if they did away with the thermovalve after '79, what did it's job in 1980-83 ?

I can e-mail the picture of this connector to anyone that would like to help, and may be familar with what the connector to a temperature/thermo valve looks like.

The thermovalve is a round object about the size of a half dollar. It has two vacuum connections and an electrical connection similar to the WUR. It is mounted underneath the bracket that holds the aux air blower. I think that all ROW's 78-83 use a thermovalve to aid in cold starting.

There is also an electrical connection to the back side of the air box. This is for the air flow detect switch. Does your fuel pump come on when you move the key to ON? If so, this might be why.

According to my limited selection of wiring diagrams the wires going to the air flow detect switch should be black/brown and brown which is why I didn't list it as the unconnected component. As wckrause suggests: see if your fuel pump runs with the key in the on position (but with engine not running). If it runs the air flow detect switch is disconnected. If not look for the thermovalve (temperature valve).:D Jim

Ahh, thank you guys. I believe it's a case of the missing thermovalve. I do happen to have a metal bracket below my heater blower with nothing attached to it. My W.U.R. does not have a vaccum nipple off the side of it like the one shown in the Pelican parts diagram. My guess is the W.U.R. was replaced at one time with one meant for a U.S. 1980SC. Hence no vaccum line to go to the thermovalve. Then the thermovalve was probably tossed, and the wire just tucked in below the airbox.

Any chance I'll ever get this car to cold start with less than five tries? It always starts, but always takes about five key starts. I have yet to test the cold start valve, so that could still be the problem. I just didn't like the idea of an unplugged connector in there.

My fuel pump does NOT run until the engine has been started.

I can't get the picture to upload because it's twice the byte limit of 65,000. Don't know how to get around that...

If that wire is to the right side of the motor in the back, that is the wire to the roll-over valve. Alot of technicians disconnect that roll-over valve when troubleshooting fuel injection problems. The roll-over valve shuts off the power to the fuel pump if you ever get upside down. If you survive the roll-over, everybody is going to laugh you to death. OTTO

That thermo valve your talking is the thermo switch for the cold start valve. It's timed to let gas throug the cold start valve while starting the engine. That may be the reason you have a cold start problem.

The thermovalve is not the same thing as the thermo time switch. The thermovalve is a vacuum valve that is found only on 78 and 79 US cars, and on ROW SC's. It is used to make the WUR go into full throttle enrichment mode during cold starts. It is used only with WURs that have two vacuum ports. The later US SC's with the O2 sensor didn't have the thermovalves, and had a WUR with a single vacuum port.
