hmmm...what's this green wire do?

Peaking around the engine bay the other night, and noticed this wire just hanging loose...any ideas as to what it should be connected to?

This is driver's side engine bay, back left corner.

My '78 has a green wire like that but it's on the other side of the engine bay and controls the A/C clutch.

That controls the Fetzer valve, you will need to prepare it with some 3 in 1 oil and gauze pads, you will need about 12quarts of Prestone though. It's all ball bearings these days.

To the original poster, that's the oxygen sensor connector.

Brian

So, why would this be disconnected?
Just bought the car and moved it in state, so I have until next Feb. to get it inspected to pass NC laws. I'm assuming the o2 sensor will be looked at.

Probably should get this fixed now, that run around next year.

I would agree that it's an O2 sensor, and it should be under the black loop with the 10mm nut in the photo. BUT, for an 84 Carerra, shouldn't it be a 3 wire version for the Motonic?

You really need an O2 sensor on a Motronic engine. They are a wear item and need to be replaced on occassion.

If you do a search you will find a few threads on the O2 sensor connectors crumbling. There are various ways others have fixed this, since you can't but a replacement connector. It is a 3 wire sensor, the wires for the O2 sensor heater should be there somewhere.

I would say to bend down and see if the O2 sensor is actually in the catalytic converter. If so you should see a black wire coming off of it going up into the engine bay. Then just feel around back in the engine bay where the wire goes up. It maybe there and just be unplugged.

Keep in mind that it is not uncommon for people to disconnect the 02 sensor to slightly richen the mixture and bump HP (theoretically).
