Color to Sample Paint Question

I have an '80 SC "Color to Sample". The paint code on the door post is 608-9-2 but I can't figure out what it is. Had the car at parade on the concours line a few years ago and a couple of old guys said it was "Dolphin Grey". I have seen pics of Dolphin Grey cars and it looks like it could be but I have not had it sitting next to a known Dolphin Grey for comparison. It is NOT Marble Grey as mine is lighter and has a bit of a blueish tint when sitting next to Marble Grey. Any help would be appreciated.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1302098376.jpg

Check this out... A dolphin grey GT3 RS.

It seems that the color doesn't photograph very well. It's different in ever shot.

Yes, that has been my problem. Saw the pic of the GT3RS, looks like it could be but light affects this color so much it is hard to tell without having them sitting side-by-side. Maybe the guy with the GT3 will send it to me to "evaluate" for a bit!

You could try asking him but I don't like your chances... ;)

I am afraid you are right . . .

Dolphin Grey is 610, so it might be close.

I think it was originally a 356 color but like so many things Porsche it keeps coming back.

I wonder how long it will be before they (Porsche) fit a fixed tea tray spoiler on the back of the then current 911?

It was a special order 356 color in '64 and '65 and the paint code I found attached to it was 6410. The factory treats some of these colors and color codes as national secrets, very frustrating. It is possible the "Sample" color was not ever a Porsche color but I kind of thought that someone ordering a car from the factory might request a discontinued color. Another unique (I think) feature of this car is the navy blue factory headliner. All I have ever seen is Ivory or Black.

My '87 Carrera with a Marine Blue interior came with a blue headliner. However, I don't recall seeing a SC with anything other than a white or black 'liner. Your blue headliner was probably a special order item.

I like the color combo, Dolphin Grey or whatever it is! Perhaps the Porsche COA folks here in Atlanta can help you with the color code. Their number is 1-800-PORSCHE

My 74 Carrera is paint to sample 615-8-2. It is similar to Slate Gray. I'm guessing the paint code refers to a specific paint mix on paint-to-sample cars. I doubt they would name the colors, unless somebody specified that their 'paint to sample' match 1969 Slate Gray or 356 Dolphin Gray or whatever. There's probably a little notebook at the factory with each of these codes and the paint mix ... that's my guess

my 81sc has blue a headliner.

615 is Slate Gray, what is unusual is the 8 that refers to the paint facility (not Porsche). Whatever the facility, it usually did the RS cars.

So if the first 3 digits are the Reutter paint code (608, Porsche # 5606) and the rest are other indicators, then according to a mid-50's 356 paint code chart mine should be silver metallic and it is neither silver nor metallic. Dolphin Grey of '64-'65 does not have a Reutter's number, only the Porsche number 6410. It is looking like I may not get to the bottom of this! I guess I need to dig back through the papers and find the original buyers name and try to track him down. May be the only way to solve the riddle.
