DME harness again Roland
Roland I have the the seats carpet etc out.
1974 coupe 1. Is the hole that needs to be cut for the DME harness next to the cargo strap bracket below the rear seat cushon on the drivers side. 2. When mounting the DME brain I plan on mounting it even with the front of the seat rails. Is this correct for the mounting point. 3. I am replacing the 1974 main wiring harness with one for a 1986 (year of the 3.2L motor) Any switch or gauge issues that I might run into? It is very obvious that the connectors are different. 4. Ok I am replacing most of the harness for the electrical. 5. Thanks for the help. Chris |

Hello
1. Is the hole that needs to be cut for the DME harness next to the cargo strap bracket below the rear seat cushon on the drivers side. Yes it is close to the outer lower corner as the loom runs forward on that edge anyway. You need to cut a big hole ( see rubberboot) as you should have the possibility to run the wireloom trough in both ways including the striped DME Connector 2. When mounting the DME brain I plan on mounting it even with the front of the seat rails. Is this correct for the mounting point. Normal postion is flush with the forward edge from the floorpanhump. On retrofits I make a aluminiumcarrier boltet between the seatrailsupports. Has enough space to mount the appendix and don´t need to drill the floorpan. If you like to get a idear then look at 964 setups. BTW dont mount the brain direct to the lower pan section as it can "swim" in water or get hit from the underside 3. I am replacing the 1974 main wiring harness with one for a 1986 (year of the 3.2L motor) Any switch or gauge issues that I might run into? It is very obvious that the connectors are different. Thats not a big problem ( at least for me ). It is simplier to modify the existing 77 main wireloom. If I say mainwireloom i talk about the wireloom trough the tunnel and not the big unit behind the dash. 4. Ok I am replacing most of the harness for the electrical. Where is your problem ? The DME wireloom runs up under the main circuit board in the trunk and needs some wires on the fuseboard and two interfaces for instruments and alarmsystem. Thats all pretty straight forward and fits like the factory made it. Basically you need two little 4 pin DME wire loom connector interfaces up front and a big 14 pin interfaceconnector on the rear engine bay wireloom. Thats some 20$ material and just 1 hour soldering and crimpwork. Renewing the main wireloom trough the tunnel is som 4-6 hours swating and scarfed up hands. 5. Thanks for the help. Browse the archives for more details and pictures from G. Kutter on his 78 conversion. Right now you only see the electric side but there are some other issues to look over as well. Grüsse |
