Finding oil leaks on '74 911 Targa

It appears from my research that oil leaks are
not uncommon on these cars. With that in mind...
what is the best way of determining where the
leaks are ? Oil cooler seal ? Oil pressure
switch ? ....etc... etc...

Any help would be appreciated....

Welcome to the board.

I think if you can be more specific about the area of the leak, of post a picture of the area in question, you will find that the members of this board will be forthcoming with a huge amount of useful information.

If a question is too broad, nobody can help.

Having a 2.7, I have some experiance with SOME of the common leaks, but not all.

Good luck

Big pimpin for Wayne.. I highly recomend getting his book. He covers the common leaks and their fixes. For the same low price you get a lot of (well, 101) projects.

OK - thanks for the info... The leaks seem to be toward the center of the motor (appears to be
under the where the fan is). I usually see
2 small drops fairly close together there.

Step one clean motor.
Step two drive car check for fresh oil leak(s)
Step three if step two is not satisfactory get a dye kit for leak tracing. www.ontool.com
Step three point five reclean motor follow dye kit instructions.

Help
1. oil rolls down hill, go up to where it stops
2. fans and liquids make big mess making it difficult to find some times.
3. Oil will leak only from where it supposed to be.
4. Oil will leak from pressure lines, senders, o-rings, gaskets and the case halfs.

This is simple advice but it works.

Thanks guys for your help... In your opinion... would it make more sense to take it to a Porsche shop (reputable - or perhaps a dealer ) and have them give you an estimate on what it would take to fix them ? I've got about 33K miles on the engine
that was rebuilt - it seems way to early for it to
be having problems. It doesn't smoke or run bad
at all - in fact it runs extremely strong....

My thoughts were leaning toward selling the car, but I think if I just put a little money into it
it will be well worth it... So I'm having second
thoughts about selling the car...
