well the whistle and whine is back and worse.
I filled with Swepco but I still get the high pitched noise in 3rd and 5th in the 2200-2600 RPM range...it is so annoying...and now it is even in 5th above 3600 RPM... I don't understand why it is just in these gears...and at these RPM's...and only when I am on the gas...if I let off in these gears and ranges the sound is not present. People have suggested that I am driving at low RPMS but what do you guys normally shift at? Are my gears fatally worn? I am worried that during my massive tranny oil leak (missing main shaft seal) these gears were out of the oil for too long and now are damaged...please say it ain't so... But if it is...what is the best and most economical way to fix this problem... I did the clutch replacement, so I guess doing tranny work would be interesting...but does the cost of special tools and such make a professional job a better option? What is the estimated cost of this project (assuming 3rd and 5th are damaged?) What about this tranny exchange program with Vertex? (do I lose serial numbers during this swap?) Or could this just be a shift coupler adjustment prob??? Any suggestions would be great... HELP MJ |

MJ,
You have answered part of your own question! If it was run low on oil ... then the entire input shaft, was inadequately lubricated, and it is THE BEARINGS, NOT THE GEARS, THAT ARE DAMAGED! It could also have been 4th gear, but my assumption is that you don't use 4th much in your driving cycle, and that needle bearing was bever loaded very much while the gear oil was low. The diagram below may be of some help understanding what happened ... ------------------ Warren Hall 1973 911S Targa |

I had the exact same problem in 3rd gear on a tranny I got from vertex. I believe they told me that the gear was pitted? Warren, have you heard of this?

Just for kicks, try readjusting your shift linkage. You may have adjusted it wrong after reinstalling the trans. putting excessive tension on the shifter in 3rd and 5th.

funny thing is that this problem has been hounding me for 2 weeks now...as soon as I posted this thread, and went out to drive it, no whistling???!!! what gives...but I doubt that the problem is fixed...we will see when I drive it later tonight.
Well so what about the fixing issues...should I just get a whole new tranny (does that mess up the serial numbers?) or should I take her apart and replace the afflicted gears and anything else that is problematic? Any type of rough ball park figures as to price? And is a tranny something a DIY can do? I have done the clutch and various other projects...but I am not mechanic. thanks MJ [This message has been edited by 82SC (edited 07-13-2001).] |
