Homemade footboards??

OK I know someone has tried this, just looking for advice.

My footboards are in poor condition, same as everyone elses from what I read. I am planning on fabricating my own. I have access to variety of metal tools, latches benders etc. I can also get small chunks of metal fairly cheaply. Maybe some free pieces of stainless???? Anyways Besides the bending it seems quite easy to do the cutting.

I can use my old one as a template. What do you guys think, or should I try to make new ones from wood??? I prefer stainless.

Shawn

I think it is a very doable project, especially for you. I saw those beautifull door panels! I like the idea of stainless myself. Plus, if you get the materials for free, that's like $100-150 for other goodies for your car.

The original ones are made from something like 1/2 inch, eleven layer Finnish birch plywood which is the very best, and cost the most. I recommend that if you make it out of wood, you do the same. You may be able to source the plywood from a specialty lumber yard or supplier, or do a Google search for it. Old SAAB 900 trunk floors are lined in this material - perhaps you can get an old one out of a salvage yard and work with it.

Mine is shot too, and I've been thinking of making my own from Star-Board. For those who don't know what it is, you typically see it on boats. It's used in place of wood, usually for cabin doors and such. It can be cut, drilled, routed, etc. just like wood, but it's a polymer/plastic material that won't rot, delaminate, warp, etc.

Many hobby shops also sell 1/4" and 3/8" birch plywood. You may consider making it out of alumninum...

Shawn, disregard my last email LOL !!!

I think I will take my unit to a machine shop to see what they would charge to fabricate one for me. I cannot imagine it will be $ 125 US.

GT-Racing makes a super trick aluminum floorboard. Here's a pic of one in my racecar... Expensive though... I bet you could get a machine shop to fab one for < $100

This is like 3/8" alum.

Related questions; My floorboards rotted badly & removed them about 1-1/2 yrs ago. Are they necessary? Can you over travel the clutch pedal without the floorboard acting as a stop? I've gotten comfortable with the extra leg room.

Thanks for all the pics and links guys

H2O that is exactly what I am looking to do, nothing to fancy just practicle and strong.

I would think that the diamond plate would be REAL HEAVY??

CSTREIT the one you posted isn't bent, it kooks really straight, I wonder why it doesn't interfere with pedal travel?

I am thinking aluminum too, less weight

Shawn
