I don't think you do but when he's getting in and out of the car you may get a glimpse of what's there. From a very vague memory of the movie it has an OEM wheel but I'm really not sure.

Its oem in the movie.. he owned the car after that for a short period. The reading I've done about previous owners never mentions any change in wheel.. only new paint and glass... so far...

"McQueen is said to have ordered the 911S, selecting air conditioning and a U.S.-band AM/FM Blaupunkt; steering wheel upgrade is also attributed to the actor."
from hemmings.com... but dont know if its accurate.

There was an article in Playboy after the movie came out talking about how the movie was made. The 911 was described as a special one in that it had been built bye The Factory to even tighter tolerances than a normal car which are pretty tight. There is a scene in the story where somebody is throwing firecrackers and some go off quite close to the car, making McQueen pissed off.

Totally unrelated, but I know a movie producer named Mario Iscovitch who must me 75 y/o. Mario and I were talking last week and he was McQueen's personal assistant for 3 years. I think he worked with McQueen on "The Great Escape", Bullett and Le Mans, among others. How is that for experience? Mario told me McQueen was one of the nicest guys you'd ever meet. If you were interested in cars/racing he'd talk with you between takes about the subject; didn't matter who you were, a grip a mechanic, said he was great.

It's not a "crime" at all to put a Prototipo in an early 911. As a matter of fact it's commonly done. This is the same steering wheel Porsche put in the 917 and 911R so it's a great choice for upgrading the wheel on a 911 of that era, and specifically a great fit for Steve McQueen's Le Mans 911 since that movie centered around the 917.

Another cute trick is to install a 914-6 wheel...slightly smaller than the original 911S wheel.

No, prototipo's first came out in middle/late 60's. But that particular example (if it's flat) cannot be earlier than around mid 70's ? (i would have to see the 'prototipo' marking closer to see the style . It could be later) .
If it's dished ....80's or later. (I cannot tell from the photo , which it is) 60's to very beginning of 70's, the 'prototipo' marking was at the very bottom of the center spoke. Just above where it meets the grip. Starting in the mid 70's the Prototipo was moved up to between the 1st and 2nd hole. Last edited by RatBox; 04-13-2011 at 06:06 PM.. |
