newbie lug nut question
 

New member here, Porsche owner for 2 days. My rear wheels each have 2 "hollow" looking lugs (see pic). I did not receive a tool kit or any keys other than the ignition key. Are these locking lugs and do I need some special tool to remove them? I have not tried to torque them off.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1302787630.jpg

I believe that's an OEM locking lug nut, with the lock removed. Standard lug socket fits.

If you can get a wrench on them and they turn, they are not "locking". Most locking nuts will spin freely or simply won't allow any sized socket to get a hold of the nut.

Those don't appear to be locking lug nuts to me. Many folks here especially the ones who race or attend driver's education courses will swap to those open ended nuts so they can visually check that they are all seated correctly. I think the closed nuts are OEM.

By the way, where are pictures of the rest of the car?

Those lugs are for locks. However, the locks are not installed. I don't see any problem in using them other exposure of the end of the lug to the elements which could lead to rust/corrosion.

The factory locking lug nuts have a round cap with a lock in it, that slides over this nut and rotates freely once it's locked in place. This is the base nut with the locking cap removed. I just sold a set of factory original locking nuts just like this.

BTW, you have two on each rear wheel; not that it makes any difference without the locking caps, but there would have been one on each wheel from the factory.

I have been running without my locks for a year in the rain - no issues, no worries

The OEM locks on mine were always a PITA, probably a previous owner thought the same and removed the lock from them...like I did. Just ordered from our host four locking lugs of a better design. Cheers

In Alabama - and yes, it's already hot here.

+1 for the Pelican locks even though most wheel stealers are looking for 22" wheels. Ebay or your neighborhood Pcar repair shop should be able to supply the extras.
If your tires are more than five years old, replace them - regardless of the tread left. I think 90% of the people on the board will back me on that, and that is as close to unanimity as you will find here.

According to the color code it is "slate blue metallic"...the color is great but to be honest the condition of the paint job shows much better in the pics than it does in person. Yes my 1st p-car, I shopped around for 25 years :-)...was not particularly looking for a cabrio...I bought the car sight unseen and drove it home 600 miles through rural Arkansas, Tennessee, and Mississippi at night - it performed flawlessly: hot, fast, loud, smelly and I still can't wipe the grin off my face 2 days later. It has a performance exhaust. No mods planned except C4 headlight conversion (I think that's right?) and possibly lose the spoiler - IMHO the cab looks better without it - closer to a Speedster. Thanks all for making me feel welcome here.
