so with $7500 or so to spend...
what would be your choice in a p-car? The car would serve as a daily driver (although it would have ready backup), and hopefully wouldn't cost a ton to keep running for the next year or so. Seems to me that finding a really clean 912 might be the best choice, as it would be probably in better shape than a 911T for the same $$$ figure, and would be cheaper to maintain. Another option might be a restored or well-sorted 914. At any rate, just something to have fun driving for a year or so until the budget increases (LA house prices are nuts).
Anyone done the experiment? Or do you stetch the budget up to $10-12K or so to join the SCWDP? |

$7,500 price? You have to be kidding, right? I mean, buy a 924 and get ready to rebuild? At a cost of buying the car for $500 and then putting $7k in to make it a daily driver? If I had that much money, only that much money, to spend on transportation? A P car, of any model, would not enter my thinking.....

Nostatic, you're postings are such fun it would be excellent to have you in the SCWDP. Maybe you could be head of department of relationship counseling or something like that
SC's are good cars and easy to own. I was at the bottom end of the market - with the limmited money Ii had so I bought a brown one. Seriously the brown ones are cheaper. As the years went by it needed some rust fixed and a repaint so I pulled it to bits and got it painted silver. So everything is just great and I get to be a member of the SCWDP south pacific region and get to report on things like topless girls at the beach and other things relavent to owning a 911.

Hmmm...
Aren't you the same nostatic that told everyone about his $200k+ household income, wife's approval on a $40k+ car purchase, been asking about purchase advise on everything from a 356 to a 993 because you need a warranty and air? Now it is a $7500 car. I don't know, 200+ posts and doesn't own a pcar. Yes had one for a couple days until the wife saw it, launching the biggest soap opera the 911 board has seen. I often wonder how many posts on this board are bogus. You know, guys chatting up some issue on their imaginary car for god only knows what reason.

It can be done, Nostatic.
My 911T was $5K in MA in Nov. 2001 - see below. No structural rust. Engine excellent (like new compression and leakdown), no oil leaks whatsoever. Carpets worn/freyed due to water damage - no leaks now. It hadn't been used for a while and ran quite rough when I got it. I serviced it and it's now fine and done 2,500 miles since I got it, no problems at all. If you're prepared to search and negotiate a bit, bargains can be found. My car is a bit of a stop gap until my life settles down a bit as I'm so busy and traveling workwise, and then I can focus more time on a car, hence looking for a cheaper 911 that I can really use - I sold my last one for a lot more than $5k. So, it might not be typical but they're out there.... Good luck.

You could get an absolutely killer 914/4 2.0 for that amount. A clean early 911T. Or a nice 944 or an early 928. Or a shabby but roadworthy 356B/C. You have to decide what you want.

Glad to have started the heat in this string. My original point? $7,500 won't buy much of a Porsche...nor will it buy one needing nothing. So, we all know parts and labor on P cars these days...we call it the "P car tax". These days, when a good 911 engine rebuild can easily cost $10,000? To ask for a $7,500 bargain car? Well, anything's possible...

I almost forgot about the 65` 356 I picked up 2 weeks ago. You could have a beauty like this for $500.00 which is what i paid

I would go with a nice 914 2.0L. $7500 won't buy you a 911 that you don't have to put any $$$ into. You could also go with a nice 944 for about $4-5K, and that would satisfy your urge...

Well... you just never know. Keep your eyes open.
I may be biased, but I wouldn't discount the thought of picking up a 912. Hemmings has named them 1 of 10 cars to watch for the next decade. BA tells me he thinks 912's are really under valued. Sleepers. A lot of car for the money. It's not all about HP. A 69 912 is less tail happy than a 911. Lot's of fun. And yes there are deals to be had on 911's. I paid $4800 2 yrs. ago for my 911. (Would have been $4000. Had to beat an offer.) Fresh "S" engine, paint, tires, dash, headliner, seals, torsion bars, sway bars, etc. PO was moving... needed a buyer quick. The 912 was $2650 about 3 yrs. ago. Fresh engine and $1000 worth of parts included. "If you buy it, you've got to take these parts." The Targa was around $5000 years ago. Major expenses? $350 into the transaxle.I'm smiling...
