Sunroof question

Hi there. The sunroof on my '88 stopped working late last year and I haven't gotten around to looking at it until today. When I try to open it, I can hear the motor working it starts to retract, moves slightly to the rear of the car and stops. I can still hear the motor spinning after the sunroof stops moving. One other thing to note is that I can manually open and close the sunroof perfectly with the crank tool.

So my question is do I have a defective clutch or transmission or could it be the cables? Would it close manually if the cables were broken or have come detached?

Thanks

Chris

There is a small rubber like connector at the motor they strip out sometimes. The roof may be binding causing this to happen. I would take it all apart check cables etc...

Thanks for the reply. I'll take it all apart to see if a cable has let go. I hope that's the case as the motor and transmission are expensive to replace!

Im not an expert on the sunroof, but I would think if you can use the crank tool to open/close it, the cables are fine.

Me either, but that was my thought too. The motor turns too so I'm wondering if it's the clutch and/or transmission.

If you post an add on the classifieds you can get what you need for a reasonable price.

nothing is wrong with mine right now but where is this crank deal you are talking about? Would an 83 SC have it?

Quick update....I had my son activate the sunroof switch as I was in the back observing the motor, clutch and transmission. The motor and clutch were both spinning but still no sunroof movement. So I pulled the transmission and clutch off.

Clutch looks fine so I took a closer look at the transmission. If I hold the clutch in place with my hand I can move the transmission gear both clockwise and counterclockwise with a screwdriver. If i can do this with a screwdriver, I can't imagine it's strong enough to open and close the sunroof.

I'm assuming means I'm in for a replacement transmission, correct?

Thanks for the help.

Chris
