Alternator wiring - HELP
Hi, the weather is sunny and I am in the garage with my carrera 74.
Car has the internal regulator and worked like a breeze with my CIS engine, now that I have the 2.7 MFI engine in it does not charge. Can anyone please identify the connections? I have a ground strap to engine, thats fine, I have the red wires in place as well. The small brown and the blue is where I am stumbling. D- & 61 The marking on the alternator are too shady to identify, I could swap the two buggers but the alternator in/out is not the funniest of jobs. Please help,.. I want to get out and drive!! ;) http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/p...l/IMG_0216.jpg Going through the threads.... from what I see the blue wire seem to go to the same side as the ground, I might give that a try then. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1206987166.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1224131819.jpg And another one ... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1178296699.jpg |
The blue signal wire is attached with a 7 mm nut, the ground is 8mm and the main red is 10mm.

Do you have D- and B+ mixed up? - No, you have it correct.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1302967495.jpg Edit - looking at it again, you have it correct. You say it doesn't charge? How do you know? Red light on? Note: If battery charge indicator lamp does not go out after starting engine, the exciter current is too weak because of 2 watt lamp. In this case, supplied resistor, part number 911 641 981 00 (91 ohms, 5 watts) must be installed parallel to battery charge indicator lamp. |
Thanks .. I hooked it up and still no charge.
I am giving up that alternator for now, it was identical to my old alternator and I bought it used from a parts seller here ... I am putting back my old alternator, it need 1700 rpm to kick in but at least it was working. Going to take a close look at the old CIS engine and see if there are any clues in the cabling as well. This is my cabling, small brown, small blue and red. Ground strap from engine to alternator. http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/p...l/IMG_0218.jpg |
Thanks, only the top picture is my alternator. The other pix are from the forum and I used them to "debug".
I am changing the alternator now but family duties call. Maybe I can get to the car again in the evening .. :( |
Finally charging. The problem was either my custom harness or the old voltage regulator, unfortunately I fixed both at same time so it could be either, have to check the diagrams to see if it was the harness..
I ordered the harness with the RS engine and red/white was in wrong position. If anyone get the same problem with that version of the Valeo (50A) here are the correct connections. Blue is not the 7mm but it was the 8mm on the same side as the big positive cable. B+ http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/p...a/IMG_0225.jpg I did not have the deflector installed while testing, it is much faster just to leave it for diagnosis, when finished it has to come in. Harness. My orignal 74 carrera http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/p...a/IMG_0224.jpg The "RS harness" http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/p...a/IMG_0220.jpg A healthy charge.. 1500 rpm http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/p...a/IMG_0227.jpg Singing along.. http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/p...a/IMG_0226.jpg Now I only need the tach to work, I have a MSD6 in the car and tach is dead. Tested with an Autometer unit in its place and it was working fine so cables should be fine. The tach adapter did not do much but I am not sure whether I should use it on the black purple or the white cable. |
