It's the tips...make them smaller and the loudness goes away...
I have a RUF dual out with OEM tips, cat-bypass....there is nothing inside of the muffler....it is a little louder than stock with a nice growl when you get on it and my car is stripped of everything inside. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1303398198.jpg |

I believe you are talking two different things(at least in my mind)...drone and loudness.
Drone is a whole other topic. I thought his issue was loudness... Quiet mufflers can drone at certain RPM's - but I would not call that loud. Regardless, I have no drone at any RPM with my setup, so yes your setup must be completely different. |
I just got done putting a stock muf back on my car, after having straight pipes on my 74 (yes, it sounded ridiculously awesome and indeed improved power) I can tell you that after playing with pipe diameter ALOT, the smaller exit pipes you use, the less drone you will have at cruising....there's too many options for the 911 exhaust hahaha, you can experiment endlessly :)

I believe you should re-install the Cat if as you say its in good condition and not restricting. It'll take some of the noise away. You say the car is used for the street only and you do want to reduce noise. My cat removal (cat was melted/destroyed inside)and install of a the cat bypass pipe from MK definitely increased my noise and drone. 87 Carrera here with otherwise stock exhaust. Helps me that my hearing is questionable from a life of loud so I'll get used to it.
