My Alternator Fan is in awful condition!

I was adjusting the fan belt this weekend and removed the fan thinking I'd give the fan a quick clean up.

Come to find, my fan is in terrible condition! I'm not sure what the PO was doing, maybe using the fan to whittle steel bars, but there are huge (inch square) chunks of blades missing.

First, what the heck could cause such damage. Second and more importantly, any recommendations on replacement?

Some people, like myself, have been dumb enough to place a large screw driver through the fan so one can hold the fan in place and crack the nut off. This in turn breaks the fan.
