How to remove the side mirror from an SC?
 

I have a 1980 SC and decided to fix the fact that the mirrors don't have the black rubber gasket at the base that touches the door. I tried loosening the Hex bolt but it only seems to loosen the mirror. What is the trick to getting the mirror off the door?

If you keep loosening that SHCS, the metal piece that it screws into can fall into the door and you'll have to take the whole door apart to fish it out from the bottom (ask me how I know).

Just lift the mirror, and rotate the screw slightly and the mirror should just pivot out...you'll get all the wiring with it so you'll need a stand to rest the whole mirror on while you install the new gasket. Hope this helps.

I did the same thing yesterday trying to gain access to tighten the mirror. I was lucky and just had to remove the speaker.

Now how do you gain access to tighten a wobbly mirror? You take the mirror of and there is nothing to tighten.

Paul, this is how I did it but I'm not sure it's the best way:

first of all, you need two people for this: one to hold the mirror so the wires dont get yanked out while the other works with the welding torch. (no, just kidding)

seriously, you do need 2 people:
One to hold the whole mirror in the back steady and the other to use a pair of flat pliers to push IN and TURN clockwise the round metal piece that pushes up against the spring.....you have to grab that metal piece on the edge with the pliers and PUSH and TURN like hell to get the threads to engage.....keep turning until you cant turn anymore....this should tighten her up.

This worked for me... (twice)....if you do it correctly, the mirror wont wobble again for another 4-6 months or depending on how many times your rotate it.. Good luck.
