19's on early cars

Just wondering if anyone on here has an older 911 or 930 74 to early 90's with 19 inch wheels on there car, looking to upgrade my wheels possibly going to a 19,

Would like to know what you got on it , how you like them , and is handling a problem?

Post some pics of your cars with them on ,

Thank you in advance
George

Just an opinion but 19" wheels are too big for the earlier iterations of the 911. The late 90's cars however can get away with it if you like the look (its your car) and have a more sophisticated suspension/ body shell to smooth out the harsher ride you will get with 40 series tires. The styling of the 90's cars lends itself to the larger wheels a little better but its not my cup of tea. The earlier 911 body style looks a little silly on really big wheels, 18" is pushing it.

Something to keep in mind is that the tire IS kind of part of the suspension and the car will ride and handle differently with lower profile tires. For a street driven car 50 series tires on an older car are as low as you want to go otherwise the ride is really harsh. 40 series on newer cars are OK.. due to better suspension and more road noise deadening materials used in their body shells but still a harsher ride.

just an opinion

I agree, even for a car as recent as the 993, 19 inch is pushing it aesthetically IMO.
On pre 74 cars, please don't, on pre 89 cars, please don't....

18's on a 964 and younger, no problem.

getting them to fit.... I doubt if it will be a direct bolt on.....

Porsche Crest

My '75 is a Strosek car, and it's got 19's. Narrow bodies will look silly with 19's IMO. The only reason I like the wheels on my car is because they fill out the wider body well. The handling is excellent, with great feedback through the steering wheel. The ride is extremely stiff, and not for everybody.

Going from 15" wheels to Fikse 17" made it too harsh of a ride on the street, I didn't like it. I am facing the same issue with my 993, going from 17" to 19". Hate to spend the $$$ and not like it.

I did it before I learned anything about these cars. The unsprung weight was awful.Looks Ok,but I wanted to loose weight and those things had to go.Its a 82 SC by the way.Needed spacers and did rub every now and again. The wheels were from a boxster.

From my thread

All three below were weighed on my shipping scale

First the 19s,Victor Equipment Fronts 19x9 weighed 52lbs each.Rears 19x10, 60lbs each.This is with tires.

Fuchs 16x7 front 16x8 rears.Fronts weigh 36lbs each w/tire,rears 40lbs.Went with Bridgestone SO2 tires

I ended up going with the 17" Fikse FM10s and michelin PS2 tires Front w/tire 38lbs rears w/tire 41lbs.

Silliest idea ever.
Not homologated by the manufacturer.
undue stress on all the suspension components.
Harsh ride.
Fitment issues.
Ridiculous brakes that look like CDs inside these trash can lid sized monstruosities.
Not even the 996 was homologated for them.

And then a ball-joint breaks and people wonder why.

+1 above, really? Other than a 935 replica type, I just don't see it... and physically impossible on a non-turbo flared body.

Strosek bodykits may not be for everybody.
(they are a bit too much for me personally)
But that red car looks to be one of the better examples out there. Complete and well executed conversion.
If that Is what tickles your fancy, why not?

Mostly becaus the car was not designed for the stress that these sill wide, sticky tires will cause.
Likely every component is stretched to (or well beyond) its limits.

I was talking about the Strosek body kit.
The 19's are a nono. In the looks department as well as in the technical department.

One of the problems with the bigger wheels, most are cast, and they can easily double the unsprung weight. (Read nippy's post, for instance.)

Plus, they look like dog.... IMO.
