88 Carrera Radio Replacement

Looking for a decent radio to replace the OEM Blaupunkt in my 88 Carrera. Trying to find something that will look a little more period in the car and allow me to run my iPod and will not break the bank in the process.

thanks

Not sure if this meets your aesthetic needs, but I just replaced my head unit with an Alpine CDA-105. It uses a USB cable to connect with an iPod and has full iPod display functionality on the head unit. Only $149 at Crutchfield.com. Plenty of power for my needs and fits like a glove. The old head unit that came with my car when I bought it was an Alpine so I didn't even need to mess with the wiring. The new head unit plugged right in.

Try SW radio, he has vintage look types and most of the newer models to fit our vehicles.

You could check out the Blau Brisbane SD48. SW Stereo has it (swstereo.com) for $110. It looks pretty 'period' and has the iPod connector, etc. built in. And no jukebox bright lights.

I picked up one of these to replace the 'Macgruber' style deck in my car. I was looking for the simplest, twin shaft style radio that would accommodate an IPod. I think this has a good vintage look plus it's wicked cheap! Haven't gotten it hooked up yet but I'm sure it's sufficient for my needs.

Pioneer makes a really nice one ... has only one knob and it has a feature where you can turn off the display completely. All you have is a little discreet blue light to tell you it's on. Some of these units look like a flashing billboard ... lol

I installed one in my 89 last Summer and i'm very satisfied with it !

Cheers !

Nakamichi is a period-correct replacement and has a solid following. I've seen the CD300 (CD, MP3) for around $160. Mostly black, no chrome, a little red & blue accents but nothing outrageous. Worth a look, I think.

If its just a matter of using an I-pod/MP3 - I have a little gizmo that plays it through the cassette deck on my original Blaupunkt. Plug one end into the headphone jack - and the other end inserts into the cassette slot.

Works pretty well, made by Memorex I think, and it cost like five bucks at wal-mart. I've had it for years, but I assume they are still available.

I've used these in the past along with the ones that also tune to a specific FM or AM station and have found the sound quality is not the best. I know generally the stereo in a 911 is an afterthought but I would like something a little closer to the DICE I-Audi_R I had in my A4 avant. Something that plugs into the stereo directly so the sound quality is the best it can be.

I'm doing the same thing for my '86.

I am in the middle of pulling my current radio - Newer JVC with all of the bells, whistles and bling - and am replacing with an older Blaupunkt cassette w/ CD changer controls.

I purchased a used Blaupunkt Jackson head unit and CD changer from eBay and a iSimple TranzIt USB adaptor to run my Droid phone through the radio. The drawback is it uses a wired FM Modulator so it's not fully integrated into the head unit. However I do like having the period correct radio in my dash. I'm not sure if I'm going to install the CD Changer at this point since I figure it'll just skip in my lowered 911.

Head Unit:
Blaupunkt Jackson CM148 from Continental Imports

USB adaptor (they also make an iPod adapter)
TranzIt USB IS32 - Universal Car Integration Kit for Smartphones, MP3 Players

spend a little more and get an fm modulator (not wireless!). it plugs inline with your antenna and stops all signals except your input from going into the radio. they work pretty well and the sound quality is far superior to the tape adapter or wireless transmitters.

something like this:

Scosche FM-MOD02 Play your iPod®, satellite radio, or portable music player through any car's FM radio at Crutchfield.com

or if you want the ability to use a usb drive as well:

DICE FM Modulator Interface Connect your iPod®, iPhone®, a USB drive, and a SIRIUS tuner to your factory stereo (Model FMRDS USB Pro) at Crutchfield.com

Clarification... the TranxzIt solution is wired not wireless so it has the best possible sound quality from a FM modulator but as stated, you cannot control the iPod from the headunit.

I just replaced the head unit in my 83 SC with a new Blaupunkt Toront BT400. Purchased via amazon Germany (Amazon.de: Günstige Preise bei Elektronik & Foto, DVD, Musik, Bücher, Games, Spielzeug & mehr). After all shipping/for-ex fees it was within $200. It has all I need --- UBS, in-line Aux, Blue Tooth and CD. Very subtle classic Blaupunkt look --- with a big blue lighted button (on/off volume)!

There's a newer BT410, but it is ~ $80 more. It will give you SD Card functionality.

Does this radio also have FM and AM tuners? I couldn't tell when I read the description.

I was an authorized dealer for blaupunkt untill they pulled out of the states. I carried it for the european fanatic but honestly unless your are getting the high end european blaupunkt the stuff shipped to the states was JUNK... The worst radios I ever carried. You will be much better off with alpine, pioneer, nak, or other major players. The blaupunkt rep for my area is a good friend of mine and I use to tell him all the time the blaupunkt that comes to us SUCKS.
