alternator

I have a couple of question for you guys, I have a 1980 SC and I have pulled the alternator due to not working. When the alternator came out there was a black wire that was not connected to anything. The Part number on the back of the alternator is 911-603-120-04. I have been told that that is an alternator with an internal regulator. Is this true and if it is, this is why that the black wire was not connected to anything. According to my wiring schematic this black wire goes to the external regulator which I have. It would not need the external requlator. Is this true Thanks in advance for straighting me up
