How do i remove the shift Knob????

Hey Guy's I have a new Ti shift Knob for the car and by GOD i cannot get the stock one off i looked and it says to remove the top portion of the knob and remove the the allen bolt .. but i cannot get the top of the Shift knob off and it sure as HE** won't screw off.. so how do I remove the knob on a 78SC is there a chance that the P.O. had glued it on or something crazy or am i missing something? please help....

On my '79 SC, I very gently took a pair of channel locks, used a nice soft cloth, so's not to scratch the old knob, and wrenched it as hard as I could left to right until it shattered.

sorry to tell ya, but they have a crush bearing which won't let the knob come off anyway but broken. some have other ways (unscrew), but the SC, well.......

On an Sc it should simply pull off. It's held on by a crush sleeve. Take a large open end or adjustable wrench and place it under the knob. Use a rubber hammer or something similar to tap upward until it comes off. I believe the carrera's used the allen bolt, but the SC have a simple crush sleeve. At least that's how it works on my 81 SC.

By Jove..Jeff C. has got it! Only suggestion I could add is to look at flare wrenches instead of open end...gives more surface for the upward tapping...

Having just done this myself...

be forewarned. It is likely going to take more than a "tap" to get the blasted thing off.

After you give up "tapping" with that rubber mallet, give it a real "thwack" with a 10 oz roofing hammer. Just watch out for your dash on the backswing!

The best sure fire way to remove a shift knob is to say out loud "I hope this thing never comes off". The go for a drive. Sure as all get out, it will fly out of your hand at the worst possible moment :-)
