Speedometer

I have just purchased an 82 911SC. The speedometer max is 85 MPH. Is it possible to replace this with a different speedometer from another model year that registers a higher max speed. We have just returned from a 2500 mile trip in this car that averaged 23 MPG used no oil, burned or leaked, and was most fun in the N.C. mountains. Really enjoy this forum, reminds me of the BMW MC forums. Thanks for any suggestions, Tom

Yes, it's an easy swap. I'd suggest having the replacement speedometer modified to read the same mileage as your original one, at the time of the swap. North Hollywood Speedometer and Palo Alto Speedometer are the two places I recommend. I'm thinking that about anything after 1976 will work. The speedometers that came before the 85mph version were marked to 150mph and were fairly easy to read. The ones that were introduced in 1983 read to 170mph, have a metric scale on them as well, and are harder to read.

Congrats and welcome. I just drove across the South picking up my own 85 Carrera.

Speedo replacement should be easy. Check out the 101 Projects book available from our host.

Post some pics of your car!

No. Contrary to the other posts above the 82 SC has a top speed of 85MPH. The speedo cannot be changed. Most people stay away from that model year because of that issue. Sorry you got a bad one.

..."the 82 SC has a top speed of 85MPH." What? Really? Shocking; didn't know that. Maybe I have learned something....maybe....

Thanks so much for the info. As to the top speed of 85MPH. Will you be so kind as to testify to that for the West Virginia Highway Patrol. They unfortunately seem to think I was in excess of 90 MPH when they cited me. Then they had the gaul to fine me $170.00 when as you say the car will only do 85 MPH. The car is in the paint shop for minor touch up but I would be most happy to post some pictures. Thanks, Tom

Sorry. It's a +/- 5 MPH error. So you could have bee doing 90.

Seriously though, as stated above just find yourself another SC speedo. Either the 150mph version or the 170mph version. My 83SC came with the 170mph version and I like it better aesthetically than the 150mph version. It's an easy swap. The 101 Projects book or the Bentley manual give good details replacement.

That had to be the dumbest idea anyway. Let's limit all speedos to 85 so no one speeds. Really?

You can just swap them... there are always a couple on Ebay...

However; an 82 with a 150 mph speedo says that "this is not the actual mileage for this car."

Unless: you get a speedo shop to change the mileage and either sticker the car, the
speedo or the door jamb by the VIN sticker.

I kept my 85mph speedo... it's really easy to estimate speed fairly closely, say in 5th, by the tach.
