Valve lash feeler gauges need some checking before use
 

I've noticed that the feeler gauges supplied for the holder sometimes have a ridge at the edge of the gauge, probably due to the die cutting process during manufacture. This can result in a false sensation when using the gauges since the ridge actually makes the gauge measure over .01mm. What I do is hone the edge down slightly to remove the ridge on fine emery cloth.
