Safety equipment (Helmets, HANS devices) have been the subject of a number of threads recently. For those of you who are not in the SCCA, this years "Race Car and Safety Buyers Guide" edition of the club mag "SportsCar" is out and I know that my local Barnes & Noble carries the magazine. It has a lot of good information on all of the different gear, who carries it, and some pricing. This year they have also carried an article on the HANS and the Hutchens devices. Apparently the Hutchens device is available for about $300 compared to about $1200 for the HANS device. They also included the results of some tests that suggest that the two devices perform comparably. The difference between the two is much smaller then the difference between two "base line" test. There is also a very interesting description from Taz Harvey about what happened when he had accident in a club race (I assume wearing full SCCA approved safety equipment) while wearing an open faced helmet
![]() Food For thought as we head into the 2002 racing/driving season.
