Alternator

I have a 1980 SC and I have a couple of questions. First the alternator went out and I pulled it out.The part number on the alternator is 911-603-120-04 and when I pulled it out there was a black wire loose . I have been told that that alternator has an internal regulator .The car has a external regulator .My question is is this alternator have a internal regulator and was this the reason for the black not connected to anything. The wiring schematic showed the black wire going to the regulator. Can anybody help

Thanks

When installing an alternator with internal regulator to a car with and external regulator, you cut the black wire and no longer use the external regulator.

Are you sure your external regulator is still connected? The car sounds like it is using the more modern internal regulator and whoever changed it to an internal regulator did not remove the old external regulator.
