911SC sunroof options
Ok guys, I've got the SC (an '83) down to bare tub, almost ready to soda blast and bring it back to life, with significantly less weight to haul around AND more power to haul it.
I've taken all non-essential components, brackets and wiring/plumbing off that won't be necessary when car is re-assembled, added holes here and there for upgrades (3.6 wiring harness, thru-body sway, front oil cooling, etc) and I am down to what to do about the sunroof. The car will be a street car, driven selectively, but with more track or sport-oriented mods. I have installed opening quarter windows & modified fresh airbox for improved ventilation since A/C is now in a box...I would like to keep the sunroof, but only if I can use it in "tilt-up" mode, like later model 911's. There's alot of heavy sheet metal in that sunroof assembly that I could be rid of, if the sunroof doesn't need to slide. I'm looking into available options to accomplish this mod. Has anyone attempted to retrofit late model sunroof mechanism to an earlier car ? Are there after-market solutions for this ? Maybe simple hinges and latches from another production car ? Whatya think ?? |

The 924/44 chasis had a manual sunroof option that might work for you. It would just offer tilting, and then give you the added bonus of being able to remove the whole sun roof when you wanted to. I'm not sure it would be simple to fit the parts, but it might be an option.
For the 1/4 windows, is it as easy as finding the parts from a 911 originally equipped with them? Last edited by klaus; 04-26-2011 at 11:32 AM.. |

Pretty certin the 924/44 sunroof is larger than that on the 911 so I don't think that option will work without some fabrication. My opinion is to just stick with the OEM roof. I'm sure the weight is minimal.

G.
I purchased slightly used parts from fellow Pelican....windows, latches, hinges, etc. I used threaded inserts at rear where latches are located, as my car (an '83) had holes but no threaded plates behind.......at b-pillar, I had to remove sheet metal angle that holds front edge of fixed windows in place by drilling spot welds, and then tapped existing holes that were already formed in sheet metal inside the b-pillars for the hinge screws. I think the whole process is covered on previous threads here on the Tech BBS. PD |

well, the more I think about this, the more I think I should leave well enough alone and just make sure that the sunroof works as well as the rest of the mechanical bits on the car.
When slid open, the sunroof will provide much the same ventilation advantages as it would if tilted up....and the weight penalty for keeping it as a slider will just have to come off of my blubber butt. thanks for input. |
