I used a dremel to modify the reflectors so the reflector is moved about 3/4 inch forward within the housings. Otherwise, the ballast from the harness when attached would be too deep and prevent the headlight assembly from mounting on the bucket.
The city light can be kept there. You thread the wire for the solenoid through the hole in the reflector, and the wire passes right next to the bulb and down past the bulb, instead of going thru the city light hole if one were to remove it. I verified now that the headlight asesmbly fits in the bucket even with the ballast harness attached to the bulb. I figure it is easier to replace a reflector than it is to replace a headlight bucket so I rather cut into the reflector than the headlight bucket, if at all possible. lol Actually I am now waiting for a harness to arrive and may post pics when I get it all working. But I think it will be pretty cool to have the city lights working with the HID projector retrofit. I think that will look a lot nicer than angel eyes. It will probalby sort of have a backlit look at night with just the parking lights/city lights on and without the HID on. |
Pic of citylight kept intact as requested.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1347382784.jpg

Very nicely done. Would love to see a pic of how it looks at night. Do those dimples around the edge of the projector light up? I'd like HIDS but don't need anything showy around the edge.

Here's a couple shots with city lights on and HID on in a darkened (but not completely dark) garage. Aim is not perfectly level across both lights, but good enough for me considering I modded the housings blind not knowing if the aim would be off or not... I am also going to change the city light bulb to a cool white LED bulb because the yellow color temp of those old fashioned bulbs doesn't really match the color temp of the 5000K HID's.

I'm wondering if you can give us more details of what exactly you did to get the reflectors moved forward in the housings ~3/4"? Did you use a dremel and cut the tops of the reflectors to allow room to move the reflectors 3/4" forward in the housings without hitting the front glass? Or did you just move the pivot point of the reflector forward until the tops of the reflectors touched the top of the front glass? Also did you modify the housings at all? Perhaps where the long adjuster screw mounts to the housing? Any additional details you can provide would be great. I'm in the middle of putting together a set of head lights right now. Here's a preview of my setup - please ignore the beat up chrome trim ring - I'll be swapping this for body colored rings. In this pic the reflector is simply sitting in the housing. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1410028674.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1410029268.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1410029495.jpg By the way thank you to both 84porsche9113.2 and quaz for the info in this thread! Once I finalize all the details of my head light project I'll create my own build thread and post a link here. |
I liked this solution so much that I pursued it. I order the same Morimoto Mini D2S HID Headlights and fitted them to the same H4 buckets for my 1984 Carrera 3.2. Everything was going well and exactly as the post, until I fitted them to the car. The Morimoto Mini D2S were too long and I could fit the H4 buckets onto the light well in the fender (wing for the Brits). I called the supplier and they told me that the new Mini D2S are about 1" longer than the ones that are more than two years old.
I am now in discussions with the supplier to return the headlights. Sorry, but the post was accurate for its time. Now, it seems that the Morimoto Mini D2S headlights will no longer work, without significant modifications somewhere. Cheers, Mark |
