clutch cable replacement help
Just completed replacing all the bushings in the pedal assembly - no problems at all with the roll pin, clutch helper spring, etc. Now installing the new clutch cable and a problem: Installed the clevis on the clutch pedal but at the transmission end there aren't enough threads showing to thread the nut, I need about 1/4" more thread. The clutch cable is not wrapped around the throttle or anything in the tunnel as far as I can tell.
Neither Wayne's book, Bentley, the tech article or any of the searches on clutch cable addressed this issue ?? Do I have to somehow move the clutch arm forward to get enough threads or ?? If so, any recommendations on how to move it?? I have temporarily? misplaced the pelican receipt but I assume I got the correct clutch cable as both threaded ends are correct threading. Thanks, Jack

Really can't help, have never had this problem. The clutch is not under any tension when the cable is in place, in fact the reverse. So that's not the answer. Have you compared the lengths of the old and new cables? Does your clutch have a helper spring in the cable somewhere (at the back) that ought to be in a different position than it is? I mention that because my 74's helper was missing for a couple of years. It just got replaced by a mechanic who noted it wasn't there. I haven't yet looked to see how it functions.

Just a thought, you may have the clevis threaded to far onto the clutch end.

Push the clutch cable sleeve all the way into the tube at the rear bulkead (firewall). Attach the cable to the clutch throwout arm, then secure it to the bellhousing with the pinch bolts.

Finally got the cable attached to both ends. I let out the clevis about 2 turns (as far as I was comfortable with) which helped. I also had the clutch pedal wedged all the way forward with a 2x4 (was here alone) and it had slipped a bit. When the wife returned had her pull the clutch pedal all the way forward and hold it. Between the two I was able to get the nut started on the clutch shaft end.
Had tossed the old cable after removing it... (not a smart move) so I don't know if this cable was actually shorter or not. Not sure how much the cable will stretch but the old cable had the clevis screwed further down and there was at least 1/4" of thread after the doublenuts at the transmission end. I appreciate the responses and as soon as the battery gets charged... ![]()
