917/10 CanAm Toy Found!

My Dad recently became aware of the value of old G.I. Joe stuff. So he's been going thru boxes in his attic filled with toys from the 60's and early 70's that my 3 brothers and I played with. He was trying to figure out exactly what belonged to who. When I stopped by, he said this one MUST be your's.

Can you imagine a toy nowadays with cigarette logos on it!!!!!!!! Amazingly, I played with this toy often but never smoked cigarettes. -- Curt

Curt,

I'm surprised you played with that as a kid, being that it's a 917/10 coupe which is totally inaccurate as they were all spyders. I would have thrown that out of my crib.

Curt -

Nice find! I don't remember having seen one like that with an enclosed cockpit before.

It never ceases to amaze me how well preserved the toys from our youth are. I can't imagine any of my son's toys today lasting as long but I hope one day he is able to share in a similar experience.

Half the "stuff" in my current collection came from my youth that I had one day packed up and left in boxes at my parents. Much to my surprise many years later I found them and couldn't believe how much Porsche stuff there was.

Enjoy the memories!

Orb, I think that's why it is in such good condition: when I realized it was an inaccurate model of the open-cockpit CanAm car, I refused to play with it any longer!

Anyway, I'm going to put batteries in it tonight and see if it still runs! -- Curt

As if cigarette stickers on toys wasn't bad enough in the 60's, check these out. Remember them? They're basically a Pinewood Derby car with a big fat firecracker stuck in the rear. You'd build these from a kit, paint them up and then stick a little rocket with a fuse in the back. Light it up and shoot it down the street (usually directly toward one of your buddies )!! Ahh, those were the good ol' days. Now? The trial attorneys would have a field day with any company crazy enough to sell something so 'dangerous'. -- Curt

Curt, I bet those little relics are worth a decent sum of money.

Anybody else got any interesting photos of old Porsche-related toys, etc. to post?

Here's three images...

1) A 917K in Martini Rossi trim that I foud at a flea market in Paris a couple of years ago...it's a Solida

2) A swb 911 rally car - unknown origin,,it's an old Burago

3) Two examples of sharne nose 156 Ferrari...one's brand new by Hotwheels - I bought about a half a dozen just in case they become valuable..the second one is a Lesney model from way back. My brother stole it from some kid a few years ago. He figured the kid wouldn't appreciate it as much as we would.

Talking

I just found this a few weeks ago at a local Kay Bee toy store for under $10. I wish I bought a few more for ebaying. Except for the Boxster, all show nicely detailed motors. What I think is special about this kit is that in the description on the back is says included are a '50s speedster, 911 cab, 911 gt1, and 97 boxster. Wel, they got the boxster right anyway. Hot wheels usually do well in the collector market. I am guessing the scale is about 1/64th. I know it's not old, but I believe it's a rare find as I've not seen another anywhere else. Anyone?

David - under $10 ??? You should have bought everyone they had at that price. I've never seen a Porsche set like that but I have seen a Jaguar set and the Kay-Bee here had it at $34.99. At that price I couldn't justify it but if I ever see the P-Car set I'm ready to pounce.

I don't remember the exact scale but I think it is the same as Hotwheels / Matchbox cars.

I've got a metal Porsche 907LH which is about 4 3/8 inches long (1/43?). It was made by Marklin in Germany. The doors and engine cover open up. I don't know much about collectables, but I'd say that the body detail is a 10 and the engine an 8.

I've also got a red Matchbox early 930 Turbo that I bought in Stuttgart back in the early '80's. At the time it was the closest that I could afford to a factory delivered Porsche.

These are roughly 2/3 the size of a standard Hot Wheels car. I place a DIME next to the 917 for referance. And I'm kicking myself for not buying the other two they had.

I also have a few 1/18th scale models that I buy in the same store. They are the cheapest around at $12-16 each for the same brands as the ones seen online for $30+.

The 50th Anniversary set seems to sell for around $20 on eBay. What's funny though, people will open the box and sell the individual cars. The 917 always brings way more money than the others. Most recently one sold for $15.50!

David - Sorry but I mistook the coin for a quarter. I didn't realize they were smaller when I looked at a set in the store. I have also purchased many 1/18 scale at the Kaybee and Toys R Us. Sometimes I feel a little out of place though when there are a bunch of 7 year olds standing next to me as I am on my knee's going through a stacks of cars!

Not exactly a P-toy, but kinda cool nonetheless. This is a 60's Thermos lunchbox. Chaparral CanAm/USRRC car on the front and it's got some kind of racing boardgame on the back. Close examination shows what appears to be a 911 on the square marked "OIL SLICK! Go Back 1 Space"

Ahh but closer close inspection reveals that the oil slick is coming from the FRONT of the car....

It's not a 911, I'm thinking Marcos for some reason...
