Which Fuel tank to use? 73 or 81
Hi,
In the process of cleaning up a fuel tank for my 73 RSR rep project.... I will be running a 3.0 SC CIS engine and perhaps down the track a 993 engine. I have two tanks to choose from a 73 and 81, both appear the same size. I am lead to beleive the 81 tank has a swirl pot/ pickup in the bottom which would be better for Fuel injection etc. Can anyone confirm if it is nescessary to use the 81 tank? My 73 tank is in very good shape however the 81 tank will need some repairs. Thanks in advance Brent

I am using a pre-CIS (that is before '73.5) fuel tank in my '72 which is running a Bosch 044 fuel pump to EFI'd ITBs. It works for me. Would the swirl pot pickup be better? I don't know, but mine works without it.

I have the stock 73 tank and I suffer fuel starvation with less than half a tank of gas on a tight turn in track conditions.
I keep it for originally but otherwise would go with a more modern tank. Chris 73 911 E |

If the 73 tank is the cis type it will work well.

If you have the original 1973.5 Tank for CIS, it is the way to go. It will allow you to to have a full size spare tire. Starting in 1974, the CIS tanks require the use of a spacesaver spare.

As posted above, you will need a tank with the swirl pot and there would be one in the early tank if it is for a 73.5 CIS--that is the critical factor. Also, as noted, the 73.5 tank is the only one with the swirl pot and room for a full size spare. However, my understanding is the larger volume tanks that appeared with the 74 and later cars and require an inflatable spare, were also installed in 73 RS cars (and I assume RSR as well) so that could be correct for a reproduction car as well.

Dropped both tanks off to shop today to see what they could do.... SC tank is pretty far gone and has had a liner put into it at some stage.
They will make one good tank out of the two and it will have the swirl pot ex the SC, most likely using the majority of the 73 tank. Thanks to those that have commented above.

+1 try to use a swirl-pot tank, unless you want to buy a lot of fuel pumps.

It turned out the 73 tank had a swirl pot setup same as the SC tank... we have used that.
Tank has been emptied of all dirt etc (Half a 10ltr container!!!) relined and dried, just needs a paint freshen and it will be ready to go!
