Father Stranded 1979 SC - Roadside Fix and Permatune Question
My father got stranded in his 79 SC yesterday. I was able to troubleshoot over the phone with him.
Turned out that his battery (he had left the key in 1/2 position the day before for about 2 hours) AND Bosch CDI died simultaneously. He replaced the battery. It started then died. He then installed a Permatune CDI that I had given him years ago for backup and the proper coil. The car fired right up and he was able to make it home. Unfortunately he doesn't have his timing gun with him. I'm concerned that his timing may be off as a result of the swap but I'm not sure. Does the Permatune CDI / coil affect the timing? |
It shouldn't...did he have any knocking under accel?
|
neither of those will affect timing..

Sounds like a good time to go MSD....
|
Thanks. Just wanted to be sure.
He can't hear very well so it is hard for him to diagnose sounds. It is also hard to speak with him on the phone - he sometimes answers questions and I find out later that he thought I asked something else. He'll do some test driving later today. I'll shout back if anything seems odd. I'll probably have him send out the Bosch CDI to be repaired - instead of going MSD. |
