carrera distributor rebuild in L.A./ O.C.?
 

Has anyone had their high mileage carrera distributor rebuilt in the L.A. / O.C. area? I think I have excess vertical play and I have the rotor wearing the top of the cap above the contacts.

If you mean axial play then it may be toast.

To test, note the position of the distributor ( take a pic for reference ) remove the Dizzy from the engine and spin it, if it buzzes, your Distributor's internal shaft nylon bearings are gone. Bosch does not make replacements

Those internal bearings are impossible to replace. I have tried.

If no axial play you can replace the shims to take up the slack, most likely a shim or two may have discinergrated at the bottom of the shaft. Just replacing shims will not rid the axial play (wobble)

I ended up buying a known good used distributor, you will know it is good by a stiff/snug rotation, if it spins freely, don't buy it.

To help lengthen the life of the dizzy while you are changing the oil/filter you should consider lifting off the FELT pad at top of the dizzy shaft and place several drops of engine oil/lubricant down it. I do this every oil change to insure I do not go thru the skipping dizzy issue.

Jim, Thanks for the info. The movement that I'm getting is vertically up and down. When I pull it, I will try those tests that you suggested. If I have time, I'll post a picture of the inside of the cap so you can see that it looks like the rotor and shaft are moving up so that the rotor is contacting the top of the cap as it spins. Almost like I didn't push the rotor all the way down, but it's been running fine until the other day and when it didn't start right up, first thing is to pull the cap, right? and when I looked inside I saw the wear. I pushed everything back down and now it starts and runs fine but I want to make sure that the distributor is fine. I'll try and wiggle the shaft to see if there is some wobble in it.
