Tracing a wiper problem

My wipers come on everytime I start the car, regardless of the position of the lever.

Once the car is going they will finally stop, but not without a number of "ups and downs" on the lever (with no particular order). From that point forward, they seem to work ok.

What should my troubleshooting path look like ?

Also, when I bought the car, the windshield washer assembly (jug and lines) were disconnected. Does anyone have a source for telling how this part should be connected ?

Thanks in advance.

Jim

Jim,

The washer only needs 3 sectiions of hose and a 'Tee' between the pump and squirters.

The wiper motor MAY have a problem ... dirt, or corrosion on the 'homing' contacts inside the motor. But that doesn't explain why the problem occurs every time you start the car. A control-stalk switch contact problem seems likely. You may be able to correct the problem by bending the contacts with needle-nose pliers ... after removing the plastic control-stalk covers.
