Temp gauge markings?

Got together with a friend this weekend at a local drive-up car show. We both have '83 911 SC's -- mine is a coupe and his is a Targa. We noticed that mine has actual numbers on the temp gauge markings (120, 180, 210, 250, 300) whereas his just has ticks with no numbers.

We walked around and looked at other cars. Sure enough mine was the odd one in the lot. AFAIK all are original VDO gauges that are unmolested. Anyone have any ideas what this means? Does it perhaps signify a particular set of options when the car was purchased?

Just curious. :)

someone has upgraded the gauge to the numbers type.

Put your head over to the right of the steering wheel. Look at the edge of the gauge under the bezel with a penlight, you'll see numbers in Centrigrade....most of the time.

Yep, my '86 has the numbers hidden under the left side; pretty sure it's degrees F. (USA car), but they are in there! IIRC, it goes 150, 180, 210, etc......
Edit: Not. I just checked...

My SC now has 964 gauges. But the oem gauge (euro delivery) had them.....

nesslar 05-02-2011 02:40 PM

Yep again, so much for "IIRC"....mine reads as shown above!

Joe Bob 05-02-2011 02:42 PM

Sorry to have to see you admit that in public.....

You gonna buy some graphics one of these days?

nesslar 05-02-2011 02:45 PM

This forum is public?!? http://forums.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/wat5.gif

Joe Bob 05-02-2011 02:48 PM

Yep.....BTW......I can do a side script in the Porsche font that says "Wanker de Jour"......or "Joe Bob B Rite"

nesslar 05-02-2011 02:59 PM

Hmmm.....OK, whatever..... but "jour" should not be capitalized, and your English ain't quite "rite".... SmileWavy Thx, but ain't need no grafix rite now.
Nice stuff, though.....................................free bump.................... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/suppo...eys/yltype.gif

I do not see either C or F. So, I guess the bottom line is that this is not original. Right? Is this aftermarket or was this ever an option from Porsche?

Canada Kev 05-02-2011 08:03 PM

Yes, original. And yes, Celsius.

kramer747 05-02-2011 08:27 PM

no numbers on my 83's gauge

Joe Bob 05-02-2011 08:30 PM

As I mentioned...it's not consistent on the printed numbers but the temps are.....

You can get an overlay or just memorize them.....

80-911SC 05-02-2011 08:40 PM

just to keep it simple and not over think ...
toward the bottom to mid point your good ...
above level line its gettin warm pointing up gettin hot ...
pegged up its burnin up or gauge or sender is broken ...

also if it stays on the bottom and does not move you may want to have a look around something is wrong ....

you should see the gauge bump and drop right about the time the thermostat opens ....

Steve

I don't worry about it too much. On a very hot day in stop and go traffic mine gets to the notch one click before red

Here is the picture of my temp and oil gauge. This looks very different from the markings I've seen on other 911 SCs.

dshepp806 05-06-2011 03:11 PM

Geeze,..once I understood what the marks represent (temp-wise),,..I've since learned how to read the gauge (no numbers necc'y) and have forgone any need to change out the sensor nor instrumentation......

Good enough for me, for now!

Best!

Doyle

Joe Bob 05-06-2011 03:17 PM

NORMALLY....with a cooler up front....I have two with my 3.6 in my SC......it hit's 194F and the thermostat in the wheel well opens.....THEN the oil goes up fron and come back....the temp gauge dips a bit.

After three years, I had a oil coller incident, replaced it and added a fan. It's never come on......

dshepp806 05-06-2011 03:53 PM

Although I never installed the purchased lower temp sensor for that cooler, I DID remove that nasty rear window wiper assembly and make use of it's console switch to control the fan for my front oil cooler.....everything will work as designed (still),..yet I've control over when the fan's engaged via the console switch..As I recall the sensor temp brings with it (fan) at 248 degrees F (or so) firing shelve,..considered a bit "high"by many people (and the subsequent reason many people have changed out their front oil cooler temp sensor with a lower temp sensing sensor. Regardless,..I've used it a few times in stop and go interstate stuff (over a few years, mind you) actuating it when I would see anything above 220 degrees F.....(I know,..a bit anal,...but).......very happy with this mod, over many years now......plus the ugly-arse rear wiper is gone (the lines are a bit smoother, and I've no need for this rear wiper in my area....

Sorry... I must not be getting the message across.

I realize what the markings *mean* in terms of engine temp. That's not what I'm asking about.

I'm just wondering why my gauge is different from every other car I've seen that is the same year ('83). The reason I care so much is that (a) I'm trying to understand what is factory and what is aftermarket on my car and (b) I am curious about how these cars were originally sold (trying to understand a little Porsche history). If this gauge is original, what is the reason my car has it an another one doesn't? Or did a PO think this was an upgrade? Or did it maybe get replaced at some point with the wrong part for the year model? As a new owner and a newbie I'm just trying to do a little detective work on what I have. :)

Thanks!

Joe Bob 05-06-2011 04:39 PM

I would like to see a pic....yours didn't post.

nesslar 05-06-2011 04:49 PM

yeah. tirwin: As Joe Bob said, your picture didn't/doesn't show, please try again. "Aftermarket" doesn't describe VDO stuff, really, though maybe you have a newer gauge that wasn't/isn't period correct (in otherwords, "replaced")..... don't know...you should (might?) be able to read a date stamp on the back of the gauge body.

Joe Bob 05-06-2011 04:51 PM

Yupperz.....VDO gauges have date stamps on the back.....porsche dates damn near everything.

nesslar 05-06-2011 04:55 PM

yupperz2...it sounds like a Carrera gauge to me.....my gauges ('86, build date 10-85) are stamped '85......ink lettering I recall.

tirwin 05-06-2011 07:55 PM

Not sure what happened with the pic earlier. Apologies. Here it is again.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1304740378.jpg

Learned something new! Didn't realize the date is on the gauges. I'll definitely try taking it out to have a look. I was thinking about new bulbs for the gauges anyway. This will just give me a good excuse.
