opinions on mallory box vs msd?

any opinions on this thing? Other that looking cooler it seems to do the same thing.
Mallory 6853M Mallory Hyfire 6-Series Digital Ignition Systems

Also is there a difference on the install of the new MSD 6al digital than the original?

I was using Mallory Hyfire 6AL boxes for several years. I had 3 of them fail over the years including the last 2 in moments after installation. I've switched to MSD for reliability.

nothing wrong with the original bosch unit, unless it's dead.

That's not quite true, John.

The OEM CDI unit is 'way to subject to system over-voltage events.

A poor connection, a few milliohms, between the battery, all the way up front, and the alternator/regulator back there with the engine (and the CDI) and the alternator will need to put out >15 volts in order to get 13.5 volts to a fully discharged, almost fully discharged, or heavily LOADED, battery.

It really truly needs a voltage dropping resistor and a powered zener diode to prevent voltages above ~15 volts from doing damage. If the factory CDI input voltage rises much above ~15 volts then the unregulated output voltage of the DC-DC up-converter (inverter) will exceed the "avalanche" voltage of the SCR.

The CDI then begins to "self-fire" above the rev limit (tach "jumping"), the rev-limiter then activates and LATCHES due to the >15 volts and the engine remains STALLED of fuel until the ignition is switched off for 3-4 minutes.

Same can be said for the rev-limiter that latches up if the system voltage spikes above ~15 volts.

I fried mine due to over voltage.

Never disconnect the battery with the engine running.

I've never had one fail in 35 years. Original Bosch. If you don't have one go MSD but you'll have to get your tach modified.

I find it amusing that Mallory have used "6AL" as part of the name of their product.

Why couldn't they think of something original?

Can you get away with one of the tach adapters? I put MSD on my 81 and did use a tach adapter and all seems ok. Maybe a difference in the 76?

I am testing a new CD from Daytona-Sensors. Really a relable and modern unit.....

No Tach modification, Data logs RPM, advance, boost retard. And you can lock your distributor and build the advance into the box by programming it with your laptop.

AND it come with its own tranformer type coil.....all for $600 neighborhood. When I am done with my tests I am going to try to talk Pelican into carrying it.

Will keep you posted.

"...Really a reliable.."

You've done the MTBF calculation...??

The only real proof of reliability is widespread use/testing over time, lots of TIME.

I have been running the Mallory in my 914/6 for over a year now with no issues. It is digital vs. analog for the MSD.
