Changing the Fuel Pump

Got to change the fuel pump in my car. I have assembled the parts I need. I've printed out, and read, the "how-to" from our host. I'm pretty sure I understand what I need to do - the job doesn't appear to be at all difficult or complicated.

So here's my question: What am I missing?

One concern is the hose between the pump and the fuel tank. If that's original (and probably it is), what shape is it likely to be in?

Anything else I should know before I attack this job?

Thanks - Jon

I replaced mine a few months back... it was really really really simple

If you can change a lightbulb you should be fine, as for the "what if's" check the hoses when you are in there, mine were fine, I left the stock ones in place.....Thor, I have serious doubts about rebuilding one at home, but kept my old one just in case I get some free time

These fuel pumps are mostly sold rebuilt, even by our host.
I was pretty sure to have seen a rebuild kit, probably at Zim's. However, googled and could only find one for 356 : porsche 356 Rebuild kit, early style Fuel pump (A/B) | eBay

Well, I can indeed change a light bulb. Most of the time. So I'm going to press ahead with this - reviewing the procedure in "101 Projects" does indeed make it appear to be quite easy. Thanks for the responses.

While you're in there (famous last words), you ought to change the little rubber mount bushings that hold the pump clamp, it's super simple to do. Mine, being 30 old, years were torn and barely hanging on. Our host sells them.

Yep, I've got those. Thanks for the tip. I kind of figured that they were shot, since I can hear the pump vibrating loudly - I figure that the rubber mounts are so shot that they're letting the pump contact sheet metal.

Just did mine a few months ago on my 88. New copper crush washers if you did not get them already, I got mine at the BMW dealership cause I forgot to order them with everything else.
You might need the use of an impact gun....I did ! I needed it to remove the check valve fitting where the banjo fitting is. I also changed out my fuel filter.

take a look at the feed and supply lines while you're in there, many of them start getting pretty brittle by now.

I recently went thru this area....had a wisp of fuel-smell.....had a high pressure line, up front start to leak at the crimp going into the tunnel....a VERY long analysis (by me and peeps in this NG) ensued, to saty OUT of the tunnel with any externally leaking issues...My wrench took care of this one...we changed out ALL hoses (again, external to the tunnel's plastic)...gave the tank a good clean,...changed out a perfectly-working (I guess, that is,..having no pressure readings for you to verify) ORIGINAL fuel pump from 1989 with a NEW ONE!!!! Kept the original.....Am happy with the outcome 7 months into it now...pressures were checked on the new pump and all was well. I couldn't really tell any difference in performance (seat of the pants stuff).....reliability (however) is now improved....and I've a "spare"...

BEST!
