Settle argument please.

A friend and I disagree. What do you think?? Porsche 930 Turbo vs. Dodge Viper... who would win??

Thanks.

I hate to say it but go with the viper. A investment banker type had a shop near me build him a supercharged Viper. When I last spoke to him they were over 1100hp and god know how much $$$. Big turbos or cubic inches, both need lots of rectangular dollars.

Thanks for the reply. Maybe I should have said "stock" condition here. I guess with enough money, anyone could strap on a couple of J7 turbojets to a VW and blow away an Indy car.

VW driver, of course, would probably have to be hosed off the containment wall.

Investment banker in 1100hp Viper = Social darwinism in action.

For every team Oreca victory I've seen, I've seen just as many doctors and lawyers plowing vipers into walls and barriers and gravel traps at the local track days here on the east coast.

Smart sales strategy. Make the car so the customers have to buy a new one every year or so- because they keep balling 'em up. Heheheh.

To your original question- what year 930? What kind of test? Come on... there aren't a lot of drag racing or 1/4 mile fans here.

The Viper is one of the few american cars that I have some respect for, excellent bang for the buck. In a straight line race, against a 97 Porsche turbo (still a 993?) and anything from a 92 to a 99 viper, I would have to put my money on the Porsche.

I dont' know though, never seen it.

Stock 993 Turbo = 0 to 62 mph in 4.3 seconds according to "auto motor & sport". The same car with socalled "Werksleistungssteigerung" was measured to less than 4 seconds.

That's pretty quick.

This has already been done.
A few years ago Road and Track ran an article on the fastest production cars at that time.
#1 Porsche 911tt
#2 Dodge Viper
#3 Mercedes 600SL
Obviously a 930 would'nt cut it.

A more interesting article was written on a challenge issued by Dodge to the biker world. Bring on your baddest crotch rocket and we'll run several types of races.
Bike won the 1/4 mile (go figure),
Viper won the road race.
Don't sell the performance of those cars short. They handle well. Now braking and reliability is another issue.

i was at Watkins Glen yesterday (and i'm going back there right after i get this message done) for the SCCA races.

there's a pretty nice Viper up there and there's also a nice 930 too. the 930 can't stick with the Viper in the turns, or on the straights.

there is something to be said about bags of torque and horsepower from a V10, compared to a 15 year old flat 6 turbo. the 930 isn't making as much power as the viper is at low or high RPMs.

In a straight drag race im sure the Viper would win. As far as a road course/ track it all depends on the driver. My uncle races vintage mustangs on road courses (Sears Point) He has a 6 year old crate motor and he consistantly beats vipers, corvettes and yes I hate to admit Porsches. he is a great driver and it does not matter how much H.P. you have if you do not know what to do with it.

lsolon 07-15-2001 10:07 AM

I have driven both. The Viper will beat it hands down. Lots of torque steer coming out of corners though, but very managable. The viper can be scary fast.
