Smelly heater

I may have spilled juice into the right passenger heater vent 6 mos. ago. Now when I pull my right heater lever ('77 911S) it smells bad. Pretty rotten. I have been driving around for a couple of weeks with full heat but can't seem to rid the smell. If it wasn't the spill could a furry creature crawl into the heat exchanger and die?
