Nice! 72's are really cool cars...the oil tank location, the front spoiler and the chrome bumpers (vs. rubber on the US 73). That guy owns a 73 RS as well.

Nice car.
He's got R wheels on the back as well. I guess we can "overlook" the fact that the car has the wrong f/r lenses. Maybe that is worth a modest discount? ![]() Best, Kurt |

I love that color!
Would that be a stock offering? (Now if it only had safety bumpers....... ![]()

Great looking car .... my favorite year and model, and that Viper Green (available on '73RS) nearly jumps off the screen. Looks like 7x15s all around to me Kurt, and those are '73 Euro tail and turn signal lenses - both tasteful and arguably upgrades. Wouldn't that hi-comp 2.4S motor be great! I've rode in one and except for less torque, it's comparable to a 2.7RS spec.

Wow, I absolutely love that color.
If the 2.4S is anything like Randy's "other car" then I'm in....but 34K? Ouch. I'd like to think I can play at this level....maybe not.... ![]()

Shouldn't the Euro lenses have chrome trim like the US lenses? Price seems not too high when one considers $6,000+ in wheels and a few thousand for sport seats alone! Very fine 911 indeed. Best to you, Kurt |

Yes, Kurt, for '72 both Euro and US lenses had chrome trim, just different color arrangement between the two (Euro had clear/amber fronts and red/amber rears) - the '73s had black trim. What i meant to say in my earlier post was "Looks like LATE 7x15s all around" - these are not the "early 7x15 R wheels, unfortunately.

Figures the 72S guys would respond to this thread! There was a really nice 72S at Dunkels, orange one. My favorite car on the lot that day. It had 15X7's all around with the classic 185/70 15 size XWX's if I remember correctly.

oh those old XWXs look so right on an early 911
Carlo,
I did see that orange one you were referring to. I wish I knew who owned it. Its got sport seats and its a 72 S in one of my favorite color with 15X7's finished in the early rough anodized finish on the old favorite Michelin XWX 185/70VR-15's. theres something about those old XWX tires that makes em' look so right on these early 911s. I realize that there's been and will always be much better tires for these early cars but at their heydays, the XWX was THE TIRE to have on the early cars. okay i got that off my chest, good nite guys. So the Viper Green is not an original color for 1972, Randy? And why does the seller refer to "rare factory 7 inch Fuchs"? I realize these are not R wheels and not a factory option for 72, but what vintage are they? Is this the same wheel you are running Paul? -- Curt

Is this the orange one you guys mean?
Not mine but I am rebuilding a 73 just like it. Right up there with the Viper green. |

The 15 x 7's on the cars above are later 70's wheels.
Other than the 911R rears , the 7" wheels did not arrive till '73 (RS??) or later (turbo or SC). I am thinking for some reason that 15 x 7's are more apt to fit on my car than 16 x 7's with 205 50/60 15 being a rather common tire sizes with many options available. Anyone have 4 real nice ones looking to swap? The green and orange cars are super nice , especially with the polished wheels. Makes me wish in a way my car was still Tangerine.

Curt, well all these details can get a little complicated: the color known as Viper green was actually called Emerald green in English for the '72 and '73 cars (Conda green in '71). The term comes from the German name "Vipergrun" used next to this color in the Factory Color Code and Material Sample Book for these years. The RS book by Gruber/Konradscheim uses Viper green to label this color for the RSs.
The late style 7x15 Fuchs pictured on this car became available in 1971 (or earlier) and were used on the front of some competition 911s in '72 (see historic Brumos 911 photos). Although they did not make an appearnce on commercially available 911s until the '73RS, there are late 7x15s with '71 stamper numbers on the back, so these could be considered "vintage" wheels.

Great, thanks for the info Randy. I'm actually considering this car. But the dilema for me is that the car is almost in the 'too valuable' category and may prevent me from fully enjoying it! Decisions .... -- Curt

72S
Dave that could be the same car...looks just as nice, color is the same, seems to have the same unusual perforations on the rear parcel shelf. The car at Dunkels has US lenses though and did not have the french (yellow) headlight lens.
Chris, Chuck Miller knows who the owner of that orange 72S is...heard he has another car that he goes to concours with. I wonder what the XWX looks like on 15X6's...anyone with pics? That wheel and tire combo on the orange car just blew me away...15X7 with lower profiles and 15X6 on 205/60 are more common and don't look as good to me. |

That's a tough one, Curt. If it is truly as advertised, and was originally viper/emerald green, then this is a reasonable starting price in my opinion. This color will wow anyone, and it is a beautifully modified but unmolested S in the year that a knowledgable somone I know aptly called "the balls".
If you start with a lesser condition car, you will always want it to be nicer and will probably end up paying the same amount to make it into as nice a one as this. If it is original paint, then I suppose you could make an argument that it is too nice to drive, but these cars need to be driven often - they don't like to sit. If it's too valuable in your mind, just don't take it to the track and drive defensively - what other car as cool could you buy for 34K? Best wishes with your decision, ![]()

Exactly. I just paid more than that for my new pickup truck! And what do I have to show for it? A dang pickup truck! ![]() |
