Brake Caliper Life Expectancy
Hey Guys,
I'm looking at purchasing a set of used 996 NA brakes. Obviously depending on the use and mileage, some sets will need to be rebuilt sooner than others. For typical, non-track use, what is a reasonable mileage range to expect a set of calipers to last before needing to be rebuilt? And how much does it cost to have a set of 996 calipers (4) rebuilt? I tried rebuilding my 911 Carrera calipers before and had a lot of trouble with the piston angle, so I'm thinking I would just get a shop to do it if I had to. Thanks!

I think so long as the seals have not been comprimised then there really should never be a need to rebuild the caliper.

The 996 calipers are four piston. Two are smaller and two are larger in diameter and the piston angle issue of the earlier cars is not applicable. What you need to be aware of is adapting a 996 caliper to an earlier 911. The 911 calipers are leading...in otherwords are in front of the rotor and I think the 996's are trailing. In that case you may need to swap sides and even flip the bleeders and equalizing lines to ensure the smaller piston is on top and the first to 'meet' the rotor in its direction of travel (rotation).
As far as longevity goes, it all depends. There is no single answer. Sitting for long periods is probably more harmful than using regularly, even with harder use. I am sure you would get many good years of service provided the fluid was flushed and the pistons were exercised (worked in and out of the caliper) if your driving miles are few.
