3 point selt belt update to 1966
Has anyone done this update? I'm thinking that there is basically two questions. What seat belt to use? And, Where exactly is the best upper anchor point?
I would like to use a Porsche self-winding belt system. Don't care if it looks modern.

There is no B-pillar anchor for the modern belts in a '66. I suppose you could add one, but it will require welding. The 3-point option for the SWB cars was a manual (non-retracting reel) setup which used the anchor on the rear qtr-panel, under the window. Replacement setups are available from PEP: http://www.peparts.com/Detail.bok?no=112
They also have a couple of setups with a retracting reel, designed for the 356 which may work in the early 911: http://www.peparts.com/Detail.bok?no=53 or possibly this one: http://www.peparts.com/Detail.bok?no=73 TT

Are these "frankenstein bolt" anchors easy to get out?
I've got a 66 and just ordered the retractable 3-pt belts from PEP. These anchors look like they've never been out, and now that I look at them, at best they'll need to be impacted out and at worst, they will break when I'm trying to get them out. Any advice? DF |

Can you post a photo of what you are talking about? What is a frankenstein bolt?
The '66 original setup consisted of an outboard and inboard eye bolts mounted in receivers over the shift coupler cover and out by the base of the c-pillar. There were no belts in the rear that year. If you had the shoulder belt it mounted with a large silver mushroom-shaped spacer in the oval receiver under the rear side window. These rusted out usually, mostly from the outside in, because dirt from the wheel flew up and landed on the receiver. The later cars used a bolt down low in the rocker to hold the retractor, which ran up through a d-ring in the B-pillar and down to a receiver in the center aft of the parking brake. That's what you want if you are mounting modern belts if at all possible-- BUT remember that there is almost no clearance next to the SWB "tombstone" seats so you will have to be creative in figuring out where to mount things.

Anyone have a picture of the reel mounting location?

![]() I think the reel is supposed to go here. Indeed, it looks like there was one from a PO. It also looks like once it's installed, you pretty much have to choose if you want the rear seats up or down. |

Quick update:
The 6mm bolt (in the middle of the anchor) comes out and the PEP reel bolt threads in (you may need a longer bolt than supplied). I couldn't get the anchor itself out, so it guess it acts as a spacer between the reel and the paneling. Seatbelts work great now. |
