I can't tell exactly where the leak is coming from, but it has always been a bit wet on the underside of the gearbox near the rear anti roll bar. Still it has never actually been dripping oil on the floor underneath. That didn't start until about a week ago?
I have used the car for daily driving the last 2 months driving mostly steady motorway for about 30 miles each way to and from work. I guess the engine and gearbox will have to come out of the car to cure this. How many working hours do you think a small independant Porsche mechanic will need for this? PS: I know I'm not giving you much to work from ![]() [This message has been edited by Mikkel (edited 07-14-2001).] |

Hold your horses!
I had the same problem...first i believed it was tranny, but then i found out that it was oil-pressure sensor leaking over clutch-cover. Gearbox oil as a peculiar smell...are you sure it's not engine oil? Cheers. |

I will raise the car on a workshop lift next week to get a closer look. Thanks for the hint.

You don't need to lift the car to get to the oil-pressure sensor. It sits on the top of the engine behind air-box (on my car, at least...it's a 930). You'll probably need to dissasemble air-box to get to it. These small cheap things often start to leak...oild sprays over engine-to-tranny adapter and leaks down around clutch.
Gearbox-oil has a special smell... Of course, you should check oil level in gearbox as well. |

I did smell the small pool under my car. It smelled like engine oil (?) but I still don't know how gearbox oil is supposed to smell like. I know that coolant fluid smells rather unattractive so I guess gearbox oil is somewhat similar?

That's one other nice thing about using Swepco, it leaves pretty blue spots on the concrete when it drips out of the tranny.

Hallo
Used trany oil smell´s sour and ithes in the nose. It also tastes different. The anti roll bar is at the nose cone so maybe your shifter seal is gone.If the rubber is mountet you will find a oil pudle inside the bellow when you remove the rubberboot from the shiftercoupler inside the car under the acces cover. I agree with Kurt, Swepco will leave a nice blue color on the Kitty Litter. Now as far as taste, Roland I ain't goin' there!
