engine rebuild complete, how much should it smoke?
 

I just started my motor after rebuilding it,
rings and valve job. It is smoking some, a little while idling and while accelerating. I've been told that it will at first. Should I worry about it? and how long will this last? I have not run the motor more than 5 minutes so far. Also, It is white smoke.

Depending on what the condition was before you did the rebuild, you may have some residual oil built up in the exhaust system that needs to be burned out. On every motor I have rebuilt the smoke cleared right up within a couple of minutes. This was usually due to oil used internally to lubricate cylinder walls during assembly. The white smoke could be condensation due to moisture in the exhaust pieces while they were stored in the garage during the engine build. You may just need to run it more if all indications are good.

I just got my engine back together (top end job) and it smoked for a while when I was first running it. I had spilled oil onto the heat exchangers when I was dissasembling, plus like mentioned above all the lubrication of all the bits and pieces will burn off. I don't think you have much to worry about unless the smoking keeps up for an indefinate period of time. I'm sure you had a good look under there to make sure oil isn't pissing out from anywhere?

I just started up my freshly rebuilt 2.2L too and also had some smoked and burning smells...sadly i do have a few minor oil leaks drippn on my headers causing some of the smoke/smell. since i don't have my crankcase currently vented to the carbs, will this cause more pressure to the case causing leaks(it leaks more when it's running)???

P.s. and what about transmission oil? wht does anybody recommend???

I assume you kept orig pistons and cyl , and only changed rings. 911 rings are difficult to break in. I did it perfectly, but that is another story. For educational purposes only, did any of you guys out there measure the clearance of top ring in piston grove, was it within specs, if not how many miles on engine? Was breaking a top ring a consideration? I'm sure piston wear was measured, how much wear, how many miles, what type of piston, forged yes/no? .........If interested on how I did break in , get in toutch.......Ron
