wire id help - 1973 911E

I need help identifying disconnected wires in the left rear fender well of my recently purchased 1973 911 E. I can't id them from the electrical drawings.

The original MFI has been replaced with carbs. The car has not run in many years, and I'm sorting wires before connecting a battery. It looks like these wires were "retired" at some point in the past.

It appears that both sets of wires pass from inside the engine compartment through the same connector as the tail lights. One set looks like thermocouple wire to me. The other set is 3 to 4 feet in length and contains 2 wires, a brown ground and I'll call the other wire off white.

Thanks,
Clark

Clark:

Are you sure one pair is not brown and green/white? If so, it is for an optional rear Fog Light.

The other one is very weird. Not sure what it is.

You may want to ask the same question on the Early 911S BBS (Early 911S Registry - The Front Page) as well.

Checkthe factory wiring diagram here: http://www.pelicanparts.com/911/911_Parts/Electrical/911_electrical_1973_CIS_Part1.jpg

Harry:

My right rear tail light connector has a green/white wire. The other wire colors match the drawing for this side. I was leaning toward this as the optional fog light connection since I have unconnected green/white and ground wires in the right rear fender well. Mice did a good job of exposing the wires on the right side!

Thanks for the link to the Early 911S Registry.

Take a look at the pdf'ed electrical diagrams in the below link. 'SL35 combined' is the best one. Zoom in on it to see what everyone is referring to.

PorscheWiringDiagrams

My 69 has a rear fog light installed 42 years ago by the original owner, so the green/white + brown wire is indeed up in the wheel well in the left rear fender.

The green white you see chewed up in your final pic above is for the right turn signal. Again, take a look at the diagrams and it will become clearer.

Regards

Thanks for the link to the rennlist electrical drawings. I'm convinced the pair of wires, in the left rear fender well with the brown ground, is for the optional fog lights. I'm going to revisit the other pair of left side mystery wires later.

The right rear drawing from the rennlist site just helped me put a few more pieces together. It shows in a single view what is spread over two separate drawings I was referencing previously. Now I get the right side as well. The green white on the right side is for the oil level indicator (58 in the drawings). My confusion probably resulted from the fact that I have a completely different routing in my 911 with color correct wire to the oil level indicator.

It may be hard to tell from the image, but the mice gnawed the black yellow wire. However, it wasn't the mice that spliced in a different wire to the oil level indicator somewhere between the dash and the engine compartment.! I'm adding that to my list.

Thanks again to both for the support.

Clark
