911 SC -- Air Tube

I was looking a the parts diagram in PET and noticed that there's a tube/header part called "Air Tube" for 83 SC's. I searched engine pics on google and was able to fine some engines that had this air tube ( Part # 911 113 043 01 ; # 20 in the PET diagram). But, for the most part, the engine pics did not show this part installed.

What is the function of this tube and why do some cars have it and some don't?

My 83SC doesn't have it --- at least I was not able to see/find it.

In this pic, the engine shows this tube

In this pic air tube is missing....

That tube is for the air injection(smog stuff). Your car may have had it's removed and the holes in the heads plugged.

Do you have a compressor type pump on the DS rear of the engine bay? If not, then it's been removed.

Porsche installed this system to help with emissions.

Thanks for chiming in Wayne.

I figured it was some kind of recirculation.

My 83 SC is a California car. However, I don't have this tube. I bought it almost a year ago --- PO had it smogged/passed --- who knows if it was legit.

Anyway, I hope that this doesn't come back to bite me in a year's time, when I have to get it smogged for registration/DMV.

I don't recall seeing any compressor pumps in the engine bay --- just the AC compressor on the Passenger side.

Should my car have all this stuff???? As I mentioned before --- most pics I see don't have this air tube.

I keep the air tube on my 911s but my smog pumps are off the car and when I go smog it I give my cat and pump to my mechanic to put on for the test. These two items are nice to have when you need them.

Since you are in CA, you MAY need those parts for the visual inspection.

Packy ---

Thanks for sharing your experience.

So, are you aware if pump and tubes are pretty much "visual inspection?" Or, do they actually make a difference in smog readings?

I figure if it is mostly visual, I would take a chance and try to smog my car w/o them.
I wonder if your average smog check only centers would be able to remember/or even have a instruction book or guide to tell them that the 911 SC needs to have a smog pump and air recirc tubes???

Hold on, slow down.

Your 83 never came with that.

The air injection system was dispensed with for the 1980 model year, when the 3 way cat replaced the 2 way cat.

The air injection system was 78/79 only in the US.

Wow, McLovin ----

You're the savior of the day

That makes complete sense. In my opening post, the pix with the tube came from "Paul's Garage Blog" --- which indicated it was a 79 SC.

Also, Packy who commented a few posts back also has a 79 SC.

Wow, I was beginning to sweat it for a while there.

BTW --- what happened to the Black SC you bought in OH? Still have it?

I wonder why the PET diagram/table did not indicate "78-79" model years in the "REMARKS" column!

Who control's the "editing" on this ---- I'd like to send an email to them!

No problem. It's one of the nicer things about the 80-83 SCs. That smog pump and all the hardware that goes with it is ugly, really clutters up the engine and makes it harder and less fun to work on (for example, changing the oil return tubes is very difficult with the air injection tubes). The smog system on the 80-83 is much cleaner and nicer.

I didn't buy the SC in Ohio, I was just giving my friend Plecostomus a ribbing.

worse than that, it specifically says it is for an '83! But it's wrong.

Maybe because ALL euro SC's have air injection system.

Although that screenshot does say USA/Canada, in which case the air injection system should not be present on an 83.

At any rate, I agree with you that it's ugly and unnecessary so I've taken my off and plugged the holes in the heads.
