Weber float vent tubes
Hi All –
Unfortunately, I just don’t have the time to drive my car as much as I would like – it has been relegated to a couple of hours on nice days, every other month when I am lucky (I put 10k miles on it since 1995). Being a fair weather garage queen, I am thinking of running screens on my Weber velocity stacks with 911R rain shields. I am concerned about the float bowl vents. I know there is a person on the list that makes a fantastic repo of the filter screen, but I am running 40’s, so I have the tubes coming out of the vents. Are these removable? Is it something I can replace if I go back to driving the car more and use regular air cleaners? Here is a pic of the new motor. Thanks for any guidance – Scott S ![]()

The pipes may be removed by using a countersink to remove the flare on the inside of the top cover. The pipes may be replaced but the ends must be remachined to achieve the proper length for upsetting again. I make these tubes and routinely install them for every carb project I do, this is to eliminate the internal rust these tubes have after years of use.
You could shorten the tubes to fit under the screens but the tubes become quite short. The SWB 911S carbs had short vent pipes, why I don't know; the 906 carbs used the screens you mention but without any vent pipes at all. Your vent pipes are typical, I believe they are tall to avoid fuel sloshing out of the fuel wells...my best guess. I recommend screens to prevent road debris from entering the fuel wells and plugging the idle jets. I make exact repro screens if interested; I copied frame gauge and dimensions and the wire mesh gauge and mesh from an original 906 air screen.
