Rollbar install

Fist time Porsche owner trying to make the car his own ...

The PO owner of my RSR tribute Targa installed a bolt in cage and removed much of the carpeting in the car (none of it is glued down). While I plan on tracking the car occasionally, it will be more of a weekend toy for me.

I've already received an RS carpet set from AppBiz (thank you!) and plan on installing that this weekend over some sound deadening - I know some will disagree with this, but it meets my needs.

I've already removed the cage ahead of the roll loop, as I don't plan on driving with these pieces installed unless I'm on the track (the go in and out fairly easily).

Now the question: does the cage have to bolt directly to metal, or could I install the cage over the carpeting? I would prefer the later aesthetically - it would make it less obvious the front upright were missing when removed - but if it affects the effectiveness of the cage, I can cut the carpet. Thanks!

Yes.

if your not going to do any hardcore racing and just the ocassional DE, I would think the rollbar doesnt need to be there at all. Check with your PCA region and see the requirements for the track your going to play on. Ive been on 3 tracks( VIR, Hallett, and Mustang Motorsport Ranch) and neither track required a targa to have a rollbar.

I don't think the roll bar is necessary, and likely adds a very small - if any - amount of stiffness to the car, but the car came with 5 point harnesses (and recaro seats). I would rather avoid buying a harness bar if I already have the cage ...
