Zenith 40 TIN idle jets
Can I take the idle jets out of my Zenith 40 TINs and clean them without having to reset carbs? I have posted before about the old zeniths. The car does what is commonly described (on here) as popping on light acceleration and it feels starved of fuel at low revs. At about 3000 rpms it runs like a scalded ape and pulls strong all the way into 5th gear.
The car warms up and idles at about 500rpms but does it roughly and quits sometimes. I read that the idle jets are for the low revs. Is this correct? Anyway, I'd like to clean the idle jets and put them back in if I can without having to reset the carbs. The car is a 1970 T. Thanks in advance. |

Yes you can. You might also want to clean the nozzles for the accel pump. The opening is tiny and can become clogged also....

what size are they? you should use a jet gauge to be sure, as many have been drilled larger. 0.55mm is what you want for that size engine. they came stock with as small as 0.45mm, but the gas was way better back then.

Right, I read they are Solex .55 idle jets, were in VW carbs, and could be bought (somewhere). I have not measured them or had them out yet.
The reason I don't want to reset the carbs is I don't have a syncrometer or a float level guage , but the carbs were set up by a local dealer just before the car was stored. It runs pretty good but I think something is clogged or dirty. The plugs I replaced looked pretty good too. |
