Tire Suggestions Please
I need tires, the fronts are in great shape, the rears are shot. I was told that I have to replace all 4 because Michelin dosnt make this model Pilot any more. Any way, since I am replacing all 4, I am free to change brands. I wont be changing size, the car and tires are going to be used at DE events, I will be driving the car to the DE event. Does any body have a brand recomendation?

Sorry, the tires are going on a 1981 930. The size on there now is 295/35 ZR 18 on the rear, and 235/40 ZR 18 on the front. I am told rear tires will wear alot faster than front tires on this car. I really dont know how many miles are on these tires, they came with the car when I bought it. I will be driving the car to DE events
that will be up to 3 hours away so I cant use all out track tires. Thanks , JoeF |

Joe:
Can't really help as I have a non-turbo with tires that are 1/2 as wide as yours. I have Kumhos and really like everything about them. I don't know how long they will last since they are 6 months old. Sorry could not be more helpful.

The Yoko AVS Sport are good tires for street & DE. Another possibility are the Bridgestone Potenza S-02s. The Kumho ECSTA 712s are a bargain and I see them quite frequently at the track. They do not come in 285/35 but in 275/35-18. I currently have Yoko 032Rs for street & track. It's a compromise tire - howlishly loud.

Joe, even with a three hour drive to the track you could use some brands of competition tires but they would wear alot faster and there are not that many R tires available in the 18" sizes you are looking for. So, the best bet may be one of the following max performance street tires:
Bridgestone SO3 (235-40 and 285-30) Yokohama AVS Sport (235-40 and 285 or 295 -35) Pirelli P Zero (similar sizes) All of these work well at the track, but they are street tires with tread blocks and will wear out rapidly if they get hot enough. You will probably want to watch you tire temperatures and break up your sessions, keeping an eye on the outer area of the tire.

Wasn't there a Porsche technical bulletin saying that it was a bad idea to put 18" wheels on any car that they weren't offered on by the factory?
I can't remember what the reason was. Does anyone else remember this? Tom |

the best thing you could do is get a set of 16" wheels and put tires on them to de i would probably put Kumhos on if its just de and not a timed event, the 18's are usualy only good for 10-15 thousand miles if you are lucky, why waste the money on a tire that already has poor tire wear to de on, and is expensive, i think your rears are a little big anyway, i have 18's that are 265 on the rear my last set of perelli's lasted 8,000 miles from new, so find a set of used wheels and tires for the track de's and save your 18's for the daily thing, after a couple de you will roast the 18's, Kevin
