Hot days temps? (SC Question)
Whereabouts do you guys end up on a HOT day, 50% on highway and 50% in stop and go traffic? Say 70-80F outside?
I ended up halfway between 1st and 2nd bar. I ASSUME it's normal on a hot day with some hard traffic. On a colder day it sometimes doesn't reach the 1st bar until a LOT of driving. We're talking freezing temps. http://i225.photobucket.com/albums/d...520_180123.jpg |
Looks normal.

Awesome, that's all i needed to hear :)
I heard if it hits the second bar "that's hot" and red is "uh oh" so it hasn't ever hit either. And this is the first "HOT DAY" i've owned my 911... just making sure :) Thanks man! |
+1, you are good.
Sounds funny but I turn on the heater to help cool her down when it starts getting too hot. Yes, It get's hot in the cab as well, but I rather sweat then over heat my baby :D |
I read about that. How exactly does that work? Taking hot air out of the engine bay and dumping it out the heater box? I read if you open them up just a hair (to turn the blower motor on) that it pulls the air out of the engine bay, dumps it out the heater boxes. I haven't tried it, but it's supposed to stay HOT this week so I might see how much it helps.
Great advice thank you! |
That should help too. Just open the front fresh air vents to mix in ambient temp air as well.
On a standard water cooled car, it works great for a temporary cool down. I had a 66 Mustang that developed a over heating issue and this method help keep her cool until I fixed the issue. |
*shudder* brings back memories of my 944 cooling issues.
|
Tell me about it, my 944s radiator fluid leaked into my engine

Oil cooler seals?
|
I think so, it was a nightmare, lucky i t was under warranty, but what PITA
|
Ick. Yeah I never did get to dig into my oil cooler seals, I hadn't encountered that. BUT I did have a clogged rad and bad thermostat. I also learned the hardway not to go aftermarket thermostat.
|
I've got an '83 SC, and I would describe my temp behavior as identical to yours. The only time I've ever seen it climb to the second line was when I had it in the shop for some A/C work, and they ran it on a very hot day in the shop for quite a while.
|
I might see temps like that here in Phoenix (95 degrees) with the AC on, the Carrera cooler I added makes a big difference.
|
Good info thanks guys. I considered the oil cooler upgrade. Local place had one for sale for a steal of a deal so they could make up some space in the shop.
|
Just make certain it is clean inside before installing, no debris. Might as well install the fan and lower seal ( this will insure air is directed to the cooler not out the bottom) while your in there. Elephant Racing makes a good aftermarket one with auto thermal switch.
I have it on my 85, easy install. |
I've been stuck in traffic a couple times where the temp got to the second line. scary.
|
Back when I did my first track day in Texas in the SC, in 95 deg heat, I pegged the needle in about three laps. You could actually feel the car slowing down due to the pistons expanding against the cylinder walls. My instructor kept harping at to go faster and not slow down. B&B cooler went on after that and now it runs at 180-190.
|
You think 70 to 80 degrees is hot? Try 95 to 100 degrees with 80 % humidity here in Central Florida. My 80SC temp runs up to about where yours indicates in stop and go traffic. I put in a Carrera cooler set up with manual switch and its really neat to see the temp drop when I flip it on. Usually drops down to the first line with the cooler switched on in traffic.

Hot for here lol. Good info though thanks guys.
