Wrong gearbox, '88
I recently returned my '88 Carrera to service and been driving it off and on the last month of so. Hwy cruising I find myself absent-mindedly reaching/starting to shift into 6th since the engine is so loud, and above 3k RPM.
Anyone ever converted a 911 of this era to a 6-speed..? |
I've seen some postings.....not cheap, but anything can be done with enough bucks thrown at it.

i don't think anyone should drive a 911 below 3k rpms, at least
if your 1988 G-50 is in 5th at 3k rpms and maybe goosing up to 3.5k rpms for awhile and you still think you need a 6th gear you better be running ultra performance tires and use radar and lazer jammers like in an F-15 if on the other hand you want to do 75 mph at 2k rpms you're gonna have issues good luck |
The 6 speed version of the G50 is significantly longer than the 5 speed. It won't fit in your Carrera without cutting the torque tube.
If you had a 964, it'd be a bolt in swap though. |

Minimum cruising rpm is a function of engine load and throttle opening. If both are minimal, at any speed, and the engine isn't providing negative feedback (bucking, overheating, pinging, etc.), I'd say <3000 rpm is no problem. If you want a hard number, let's say 2500 on level ground. MHO, Sherwood |
