Sealant for 915 drain plug?
Folks,
Changing all the fluids in my Targa. Happy to say that the magnets in the sump drain, oil tank and tranny were free of any metal or filings. What should I use on the threads of the transmission drain plugs as a sealer? Thanks, Wade

Hi, are you talking as in addition to the crush washer? I have not used any loctite or sealer before on the trans. drain plug, I just use a fresh crush washer, and it does not leak. I guess that it probably wouldn't hurt if you did put a little sealer or silicone toward the head end of the drain plug along with a new crush washer. Maybe others will have some additional ideas for you. Good luck.

Normally you wouldn't use anything. However as our cars get older they can leak.
If you have a problem you could try Teflon tape on the thread of the drain plug. The same stuff plumbers use for taps. Also... You could use some Curit T. Our host sells it. Porsche 911 Engine Rebuild Kits (1965-89) - Page 4

My drainplug (73 915) does not have a crush washer but just a threaded plug. I will use a little Curil, thanks.

It's an NPT thread and doesn't use a seal surface like more modern engine plugs. Use antiseize if anything and don't overdo the plug when torquing it.
Also, if yours is the one with the recessed hexagon pattern I would change it to one with the protruding hexagon since that one allows for more torque when you have to remove it later. The recessed version can strip easier. Ingo
